Work assignments

The purpose of the employment is that the assistant professor is to be given the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and to obtain both the research and teaching qualifications required for employment as associate professor.

Linköping University is one of the leading AI institutions in Sweden. We have strong links to prominent national research initiatives, such as WASP and ELLIIT and you will have access to state-of-the-art computing infrastructure for computational statistics and machine learning, e.g. through BerzeLiUs.

The position is formally based at the Division of Statistics and Machine Learning (STIMA). At STIMA we conduct research and education in both statistics and machine learning, at the undergraduate, advanced and PhD levels. STIMA is characterized by a modern view of the statistical subject, where probabilistic models are combined with computational algorithms to solve challenging complex problems, as well as a statistical view of machine learning which clearly integrates the two subject areas within the division.

The research focus of the advertised position is in the field of statistical machine learning. Examples of research directions that fit well into the division's activities are: generative models, uncertainty quantification in machine learning, probabilistic models, approximate Bayesian inference, active learning, causal inference, and application of machine learning in medicine, natural sciences, weather and climate, to name a few. The specific research direction will be determined when the position is filled, taking into account the chosen candidate's interests and qualifications. You will mainly devote yourself to research and supervision of PhD students. This includes recruitment and supervision of own PhD students, but there will also be the opportunity to act as co-supervisor for other PhD students at the division. The holder of the position is expected to establish an independent research group within the division.

The duties include also approximately 20 percent teaching.

You are active in the research community, participate in the division's activities such as seminars and workshops, participate in research projects, communicate results through academic publications and help attract external research funding.

You contribute actively to the university's development work. Collaboration is an integral part of the University’s research and education mission. Collaboration in research takes the form of disseminating, making available and utilising research.

Your work includes monitoring developments nationally and internationally within your field of study and other societal developments that are important to your work.

You are flexible and have the ability to move between different types of pedagogical and scientific contexts. You share knowledge and contribute to the working group’s professional development, collegial ways of working and social community. The fact that you are present and active is something we see as self-evident in order to ensure that you are able to perform your duties in an optimal way and enjoy your working community.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence. We are primarily looking for candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree in the past five years.

For this employment special emphasis is placed on academic expertise.

In terms of pedagogical expertise, the following will be assessed:

  • Of merit for the position: Documented teaching experience in machine learning or statistics.

In terms of academic expertise, the following will be assessed:

  • Requirements for the position: a solid proficiency in statistical machine learning. Subject proficiency is demonstrated through original research, with clear elements of machine learning, resulting in publications in internationally recognized journals and conferences in machine learning, statistics, computer science, signal processing, applied mathematics or a related field considered relevant to conducting research in statistical machine learning.
  • Of particularly merit: (1) publications in internationally recognized journals in statistics and machine learning, as well as publications at top conferences in machine learning, and (2) the ability to obtain research grants.
  • Of merit: documented expertise in collaboration in research.

Other proficiencies that will be assessed for this position are:

  • Requirements for the position: a strong drive towards performing high-quality research; the ability and interest to work in a team; and strong communication skills.
  • You must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and/or conduct research in English.

The workplace

The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming. The employment

This position is subject to a period of employment of 5 years, full-time. Starting date by agreement.

The Higher Education Ordinance states that an assistant professor may be employed on an indefinite-term contract, subject to a minimum duration of four years and a maximum duration of six years. This is to be decided by the university before the employment commences. An employment may be renewed, subject to a limitation of maximum duration two years, if, as a consequence of sickness absence, parental leave, or other special circumstances of the assistant professor, additional time is necessary in order to achieve the purpose of the employment.

An assistant professor shall, upon application, be promoted to associate professor if the applicant is qualified for employment as associate professor and, following a proficiency test, is deemed suitable for such appointment according to the grounds of assessment which the university has decided shall apply.
