Assistant professor in Technology and Social Change

An assistant professor’s duties comprise educational responsibilities, research, and administrative tasks. Regarding research the initial task of the assistant professor will be to contribute to an ongoing research project at the division (NuSPACES, JPI/Swedish Research Council), with a focus on nuclear power as heritage, and in particular the sub-project that focuses on heritage processes in relation to the ongoing decommissioning and dismantling of Barsebäck nuclear power plant in Sweden. Other sub-projects explore corresponding processes at nuclear facilities in the UK and in Lithuania. In the longer term the appointee is expected to develop own projects and obtain external research funding. With respect to teaching the task will be to contribute to and in the longer term develop courses given at Tema – Technology and Social Change, at basic and advanced level.
Documented scientific skills in:
- conducting qualitative studies within one of the relevant fields for the position, such as critical heritage studies, history of technology, industrial history, human geography, or related subjects are a requirement.
- conducting qualitative studies within empirical fields related to nuclear power, industrial heritage, or “difficult” heritage are of particular merit.
- interacting with stakeholders outside academia, such as heritage institutions, industrial companies, or municipal actors are of particular merit.
Documented pedagogical skills:
-in teaching within subjects such as critical heritage studies, history of technology, industrial history, human geography, or related subjects are of particular merit.
Documented proficiency in:
-English, both orally and in writing, is a requirement.
-Swedish, both orally and in writing, is of particular merit.
Employment assistant professor
The purpose of the employment as assistant professor is to give the teacher the opportunity to develop independence as a researcher and to obtain both the scientific and teaching qualifications required for employment as senior lecturer.
An applicant who has received a Degree of Doctor or has the equivalent academic expertise shall be qualified for this appointment.
Priority shall be given to a person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent academic expertise no more than five years before the deadline for applications for employment as assistant professor. A person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent expertise at a previous date may, however, be considered in special circumstances. Special circumstances is here used to describe: sick leave, parental leave, and other similar circumstances.
Grounds for assessment
Applicant assessment will be based on the extent of proficiency that is required for the appointment as assistant professor.
The assessment of teaching skills will be given the same attention as the assessment of other qualifications in accordance with the paragraph “Qualifications” above.
For this position special weight is given to research skills.
Research proficiency is to be demonstrated by the applicant’s own research that has resulted in publication, with documented skills in planning and leadership of research and research programmes as well as the ability to secure research grants. Moreover, research skills can be demonstrated through the ability to achieve research results in collaboration with other researchers and through the ability to communicate research.
Teaching skills are to be demonstrated through broad and solid knowledge in the subject and duties of the appointment, as well as through the ability to generate commitment to and interest in the subject, and the ability to structure and organise content and work models related to the goals of the programme and/or the main area. Moreover, teaching skills are to be demonstrated through the ability to motivate students to learn and contribute to the development and renewal of education, as well as the ability to reflect on the applicant’s own teaching-related views and outcomes.
Administrative skills are to be demonstrated through the ability to plan, organise, and develop operations.
The ability to collaborate with society must be demonstrated through the ability to plan, organise and promote effective collaboration with the local community. Education and outreach, public debate and lectures are examples of forms of collaboration with society. Other examples include patent applications, commercialisation and collaboration with industry.
The ability to ensure that research results are put to good use - where this is not within the scope of the general ability to collaborate with society - must be specifically demonstrated through participation in applied research projects, commissioned research or within the scope of permitted secondary employment. The same applies to participation in the work of individual institutions to support innovation such as commissions or employment in a business owned or controlled by the university or through a commission or employment outside of the higher education sector.
The applicant should also be able to teach in English. It is desirable that the successful candidate with another mother tongue than Swedish should be able to teach in Swedish within two years from being appointed.
The position will be appointed by the Vice-Chancellor of the University on the advice of the Appointments Board. A letter of intent will be required of the applicants who make the short list for the position.
Form of employment
An assistant professor may be employed until further notice, for a minimum period of four years and a maximum period of six years, as determined by the institution of higher education before the employment begins. The employment may be renewed, by a maximum period of two years, if, as a consequence of sick absence, parental leave, or other special circumstances of the research fellow, additional time is necessary in order to achieve the purpose of the employment.
The length of employment for this position is four years.
An assistant professor shall, after application, be promoted to senior lecturer if he/she is qualified for employment as senior lecturer and has been assessed following a test to be suitable for such employment according to the grounds for assessment that the institution of higher education has determined. The grounds for assessment are stated in the Rules of Appointment of Linköping University, p 4.3 (LiU-2021-01204).
The University applies individual salary scales based on the experience of the employee and the labour market.
