HDK-Valand at the University of Gothenburg conducts programmes and research in design, film, photography, fine art, crafts and literary composition. We also train teachers in visual art and sloyd. We offer highly specialised study programmes in an outward-looking and international environment.
Background and subject
The University has been granted funds from WASP-HS for the five-year research project AI, the Social Contract and Democracy. This is an extensive strategic initiative from the financier, with great potential for our university as a whole. The project is being conducted in collaboration between the Department of Law and HDK-Valand. The current advertised associate senior lectureship will be at the core of the project. In addition, two doctoral student positions will be filled in 2021.
The project is related to several subjects and disciplines, and the advertisement is therefore not aimed at a specific subject. The project description and qualifications of the successful applicant will determine which subject the position will be in. However, the associate senior lecturer will be employed in one of the subject groups at the Department of Law, and a sufficiently close connection to one or more of these seven subjects is therefore required.
The applicant must also be capable of contributing to the environments at both the Department of Law and HDK-Valand in his or her research and teaching.
As an associate senior lecturer, you shall acquire further qualifications within research and teaching during your period of employment, and these tasks will therefore form important parts of your work. The position comprises 80% research and 20% teaching and administrative tasks. The associate senior lecturer shall participate in relevant research environments and develop the project in a way that benefits both departments. The tasks also include following developments within the subject area and relevant societal developments. The associate senior lecturer is also expected to apply for external research funds, especially during the latter part of the employment.
The qualification requirements for the position are those set out by the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg’s Appointments Procedure. A person qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer must have been awarded a PhD in law or have corresponding research expertise. An applicant with a foreign degree assessed as equivalent also qualifies. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for application. A period of more than five years can be deemed acceptable if there are special circumstances.
Basis for assessment
For a teaching post, the applicant shall be chosen who, following an overall assessment of competence and development potential, is assessed to have the best conditions to carry out the tasks required for the appointment. When assessing the qualifications, the same care shall be given to the assessment of scholarly and pedagogic competence. The applicant shall be able to teach in English or Swedish and show a good capability as a teaching administrator.
The assessment shall consider the applicant’s ability to establish and develop collaborations within study programmes and research, as well as to collaborate with the wider community and provide information on research and development work nationally and internationally. Interviews and trial lectures may be required prior to the decision on the appointment.
An associate senior lecturer can apply for a promotion to senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is assessed as suitable and meets the requirements for promotion, he or she shall be promoted and employed as a senior lecturer in a permanent position. After 4.5 years, the applicant is expected to have acquired further qualifications, scholarly as well as pedagogical, so that he or she has acquired, or is well on the way to acquiring, the qualifications required for an appointment as an associate professor. For an appointment as an associate senior lecturer, the work is planned to allow the employee to acquire such competence during his or her appointment.
A person qualified for appointment as a senior lecturer is required to have planned and conducted research of a quantity and quality that demonstrates significant progression during the time as an associate lecturer. For a promotion, the applicant shall have established him- or herself through his or her research in the research community, nationally or internationally. The assessment shall take into consideration the publication traditions of the subject concerned. The applicant shall also demonstrate pedagogic competence. The pedagogic competence shall normally be demonstrated through teaching at first as well as second cycle and be well documented.
For an applicant who does not master Swedish at the time of application, it is conditional that he or she shall learn Swedish to a level that allows him or her to teach in Swedish following a promotion to senior lecturer. An applicant for a promotion shall have the ability to collaborate and otherwise be suitable to perform the tasks well and have completed training on the pedagogy of higher education of at least 15 credits according to the Swedish higher education system, or be assessed as having equivalent competence.
This is a fixed-term appointment for 5 years, with an employment rate of 100%.
An appointment as associate senior lecturer extends for a fixed term and is defined as a career-development position. The purpose of the appointment is to give you the opportunity to develop your independence as a researcher and to acquire further qualifications, scholarly as well as pedagogical, to meet the requirements for senior lecturer. The appointment may be renewed, for a maximum total of two years, if for reasons of absence due to illness, parental leave or other special reasons, further time is required to achieve the purpose of the appointment. The requirements to be promoted to senior lecturer are described in more detail in the following steering document: Appointment regulations for teaching staff at the School of Business, Economics and Law.
