We are looking for 

A Professor in organisation studies at the Faculty of Culture and Society, who can take a leading role in further developing research and education within the interdisciplinary field of organisation studies at Malmö University as an environment based at the Department of Urban Studies that work across institutional and faculty boundaries.

Work duties 

With this professorship we aim to strengthen research and research-based education in the interdisciplinary field of organisation studies. As a professor you will be expected to provide academic leadership in the development of research within organisation studies. Particularly, you are expected to develop new research projects with internal and external partners; actively apply for external research funding, including PhD and post doc positions; take part in the daily activities of the department and contribute to research seminars and workshops. You are also expected to take a leading role in the strategic development of our BA, MA and PhD educations and contribute to sustaining their quality and research-based content.

As a professor at Malmö University, you will participate in furthering university-wide and departmental research, education and collaboration, and contribute to the development of knowledge and research, both independently and together with other researchers. Teaching duties involve planning, lecturing, thesis supervision, examination, seminars, workshops and practical exercises. Responsibilities also include administrative tasks within the department, as well as participation in departmental activities and pedagogical development work.

It is important that the professor is capable of working according to Malmö University’s ambition of working from the spirit of critical thinking, global engagement, sustainability, and inclusion. It is furthermore important that the professor can work in inter- and multidisciplinary research and teaching environments. Organisation Studies at Malmö university is inter- and multidisciplinary in connecting business, political science, humanities, and social science domains. Organisation Studies at Malmö University takes as its starting point how organisations work with regards to societal challenges. Organisation Studies therefore focuses on the public and private sectors as well as NGOs from the spirit of critical thinking, global engagement, sustainability, and inclusion.

The holder of the position is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Qualifications 

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor. 

A teacher at Malmö University is expected to have university teacher training corresponding to at least 15 credits, or corresponding formal university teacher training, which is determined through validation. New staff members lacking this training must, within the scope of their appointment, commence such training within one year of assuming their position. A professor must have undergone university teacher training as well as a formalised teacher training, including supervision of doctoral students in accordance with the university's recommendations. 

In addition to formal competence, University employees must possess the personal capacities necessary to perform the duties of the position well and to represent the University in the best possible way. 

Specific requirements for this position: 

• A doctoral degree relevant to the field of organisation studies. A relevant degree could be obtained from disciplines such as business administration, psychology, political science and sociology.
• Documented research and educational experience, including supervision, relevant to the field of organisation studies as it is practiced at Malmö University. Relevant topics include leadership and management, work and work environment studies, sustainability in organizations, gender and diversity in organizations, entrepreneurship and small businesses, and the interplay between private and public organizations and NGOs.
• A solid track record in research leadership as well as in attracting research funding and participating in international research cooperation
• Documented proficiency in English

The following would be of benefit for the position: 

• Documented experience of inter/multi/transdisciplinary work in research and education
• Original and relevant academic production at international level, including significant contributions to theoretical, methodological, and/or thematic developments within the field of organisation studies
• Skills related to mentoring, a dedication to fostering research talent, and/or expertise in teaching PhD courses
• Documented experience of building and sustaining collaborations with wider society

Assessment criteria 

The assessment criteria for appointment as a professor shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research or artistic expertise (Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Higher Education Ordinance). 

A professor must be well established within their scientific field and internationally recognised, taking into account the nature and tradition of the subject specialisation. The level of expertise shall significantly exceed the requirements for an appointment as associate professor.  

A professor must demonstrate: 

• Documented competence in their field 
• Documented ability to lead and develop academic environments, as well as management experience 
• Documented ability to communicate and collaborate with actors in other parts of society with a clear connection to education and research 

Teaching expertise relates to: 

• Documented ability to - and with a high degree of quality - plan, develop, carry out and lead education using various teaching methods at the first-, second- and third-cycle level 
• Documented experience in pedagogical development work and a reflective presentation of their own pedagogical outlook and practices 
• Documented ability to link research and education at the first-, second- and third-cycle level with regards to both content and teaching 
• Documented extensive experience in third-cycle education. This may include proven experience within planning, admission, work with study plans and course development, examination, supervision leading up to public defence, and experience as a principal supervisor 

Scientific proficiency relates to: 

• Research within fields relevant to the appointment in question 
• Documented ability to initiate, plan, develop, carry out and lead research of a high quality and with international impact
• Documented ability to communicate research within and beyond the scientific community 
• Documented ability to engage in international research collaborations 
• Documented ability to attract external research funding in competition with consideration given to the nature and tradition of the discipline
• Documented anchoring within the scientific community  

Faculty, Department and Research environment 

Faculty

The Faculty of Culture and Society is a multidisciplinary faculty that includes three departments: the School of Arts and Communication, the Department of Global Political Studies, and the Department of Urban Studies. The Faculty offers doctoral studies in the following subjects: Global Politics, Interaction Design, International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER), Media and Communication Studies and Urban Studies. Department

The department of Urban Studies is characterised by three core features: dynamic interdisciplinary research; a professional organisation; and a highly qualified faculty. The Department comprises around 95 teachers and researchers, as well as 2000 students. We have a strong emphasis on theory-driven empirical research and teaching informed by the social sciences. Our research centres around the fields Urban Studies and Organisation Studies. Across these fields, we unite around cultural, economic, material, social and discursive processes of change. We collaborate with well-established networks within the public sector, the corporate sector and civil society. The department offers a doctoral programme and master’s programmes in Urban Studies, and a doctoral programme in Organisation Studies is initiated in 2024. The department further offers bachelor’s programmes encompassing organisation studies, built environment, environmental studies, transport and logistics, and real estate science, as well as both master’s and bachelor’s level studies in organisation and leadership. Organisation Studies at Malmö University covers a range of different topics from leadership and management and its consequences, work and work environment, sustainability in organisations, gender and intersectionality in organisations, entrepreneurship and small businesses, and the interplay between private and public organisations and NGOs. Organisation Studies at MaU encourages the interaction between theorizing and empirical-based research. The subject has a broad ontological and epistemological base and comprises therefore also a wide spectrum of methodological perspectives and research methods.
