Work duties

An appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer is a fixed-term career-development position of least four years and at the most six years in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4, Section 12 a.

The purpose of the appointment is for the teacher to have the opportunity to develop research autonomy and acquire the scholarly and teaching qualifications required for the eligibility requirement for appointment as a Senior Lecturer.

The Division of Product Realization at the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering is looking for an Associate Senior Lecturer in Product and Process Development with a focus on Supply and Operations management.

As an Associate Senior Lecturer, you will divide your time between research and teaching. For the research duties, you will belong to the research specialisation Innovation and Product Realization and be part of the research group Production Development. You are expected to contribute to projects and initiatives related to our research on Smart Production. Your research will focus on the digital transformation of supply chains and specifically the use of digital technologies for the development and management of environmentally and socially sustainable supply chains. The position requires you to actively seek funding, individually or together with others, by writing applications for research grants. With your research, you will help build and strengthen our research in sustainable supply chains as well as our collaboration with business and academic partners.

The position involves teaching at basic and/or advanced level as well as training for professionals. This includes, among other things, course responsibility, examinations, and course administration. Supervision of PhD students and being part of conducting and developing our postgraduate programs will also be included. 

The position also includes participation in external activities via publications and presentations at conferences and in scientific journals as well as through interaction with the surrounding community. As an Associate Senior Lecturer, you will collaborate with various actors, both with employees at Mälardalen University and academic partners as well as business partners and within our collaboration platforms​.

Eligibility requirements

The entry requirements to be appointed as an associate Senior Lecturer is primarily a person who has graduated with a Degree of Doctor or has the equivalent academic competence at least five years before the time for application for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer has expired.

The applicant should have completed ten weeks of higher education teaching and learning education or acquired equivalent knowledge in another way. Anyone who is appointed as an Associate Senior Lecturer but who lacks a higher education teaching and learning education will be offered such an employment within two and a half years. The higher education teaching and learning at Mälardalen University corresponds to ten weeks.

We are looking for someone with a PhD in supply chain management, operations management, logistics, production, industrial economics, mechanical engineering or equivalent.

 The position requires:

  • Experience of research and knowledge in supply and operations management, supply chain management, logistics and/or sustainable supply chains.
  • Experience of empirical research.
  • Experience of teaching at basic and/or advanced level.
  • Scientific publications at leading conferences and in journals in the field.
  • Knowledge of Swedish and specific ability to teach and conduct collaborations in Swedish.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria will be based partly on the degree of skill required for the position and partly on the ability and suitability otherwise required to carry out the work duties.

Regarding the nature of the appointment as a career-development position, the applicants' scholarly and educational merits will be assessed primarily in qualitative terms. A quantitative advantage of an applicant, which can be explained by an applicant who has been working operatively for a long time, will therefore not be a deciding factor.

In addition to the established basic assessment criteria, according to the Appointment Regulations for Mälardalens University, some additional criteria apply to this position.

The specific qualifications and assessment criteria for the position include:

  • Research and knowledge linked to digitalisation of/within supply chains.
  • Demonstrated experience of collaboration, in particular research or teaching in co-production with business partners, preferably in industrial environments.
  • Ability to conduct both individual and team-based research, as well as to work with the transfer of research results to business and industrial applications.
  • Experience of supervision at undergraduate, advanced or postgraduate level.
  • Experience of teaching at postgraduate level.
  • Experience in applying for and obtaining external research funding.
  • Established academic and/or industrial network.
  • Pedagogical training.
  • Experience in teaching for professionals.

Upon promotion to senior lecturer

By the end of the appointment as an Associate Senior Lecturer the applicant has the right to be assessed for appointment to senior lecturer. The appointment to senior lecturer is until further notice.

The application for promotion must have been received no later than six months before the end of the appointment period. At the time of promotion to Senior Lecturer the applicant must have completed a qualifying course in higher education pedagogy.

To be eligible to be promoted as a Senior Lecturer the applicant must have demonstrated the scholarly expertise and teaching skills required for such an appointment.

The eligibility qualifications and assessment criteria required to be promoted and appointed as a Senior Lecturer are stated in Appointment Regulations for Mälardalen University.

For this position, specific criteria for promotion to Senior Lecturer are added.

For promotion to Senior Lecturer in the research specialisation Innovation and Product Realization, the following additional criteria must be fulfilled:

  • Increased independence in research over time, both in terms of depth and breadth. For example, published research results as main author without more senior co-authors from previous supervisors and demonstrated the ability to attract external funds for their own research.
  • Published scientific work that constitutes a contribution to the scientific discussion nationally and internationally.
  • In addition to the doctoral thesis, documented research corresponding to at least one other thesis, which shows that the research has been further developed according to practice within the subject.
  • Well-documented pedagogical portfolio, including pedagogical qualifications, basic pedagogical approach, reasoning about the students' learning development and reflection about their own development as a teacher, now and in the future.
