A full-time employment as a doctoral student is attached to this third-cycle studies which corresponds to four years.
Position description
At Mälardalen University, there is an opportunity for mathematics enthusiasts to take part in a dynamic environment in mathematics, including applied areas such as finance and engineering. We are now looking for five to six PhD students in mathematics/applied mathematics to contribute to the interdisciplinary research conducted within our research environment.
The work assignments comprise:
Research in the field of the third-cycle studies (PhD studies) in mathematics/applied mathematics, institutional duties, which may include:
- teaching at undergraduate and advanced level in mathematics/applied mathematics, which may involve teaching at the university's two campus locations, Västerås and Eskilstuna, as well as distance teaching. Supervision and co-supervision at undergraduate and advanced level may also be relevant for the position.
- administration (e.g. course responsibility or program coordination) and development.
As a PhD student you will be a part of one of four research groups. Under the following links you will find information about our research environment MAM (Mathematics/Applied Mathematics) and the four research groups:
- Discrete Mathematics and Modelling of Behaviour and Culture
- Engineering Mathematics
- Algebra and Analysis with Applications
- Stochastic Processes, Statistics and Financial Engineering

Qualifications
Assessment criteria
Prior to employment, consideration must be given to the ability to assimilate third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education. You need to have good teamwork skills as the tasks require collaboration both internally at the academy and with other academies and sections of MDU.
As a PhD student, you need to be able to work independently and to have a structured and well-organized way of working, have the ability to work with many different tasks in parallel and independently prioritize and plan your work.
Good knowledge of Swedish in speech and writing are considered to be a merit for the position, but not a requirement.
In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.
