Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics

We are looking for a bioinformatician who will support research projects linked to several successful research groups at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

The current position is part of SLU’s Bioinformatics Infrastructure (SLUBI), involving all four faculties with several centrally coordinated bioinformatics positions. You will be working with researchers in various subject areas at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (VH), and will be in constant interaction with the other bioinformaticians of the infrastructure. At the VH faculty, we conduct high quality academic research and teaching related to a wide range of topics in the field of veterinary medicine and animal science. We are engaged in most aspects of the life and welfare of domestic animals. You will be employed at the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics in Uppsala and be part of the bioinformatics team there.


You will provide bioinformatics support and training for researchers at the VH faculty and SLU. Duties include to develop and implement tools and resources for the research community, take part in knowledge transfer and training of researchers at SLU and maintain and install the necessary software and hardware needed for giving bioinformatics support. The successful candidate may also have a coordinator role for SLUBI.


You shall have an MSc or PhD or equivalent knowledge and experience in Bioinformatics, with skills in high-throughput sequencing (NGS) data analysis, RNA-Seq, metagenomics and providing software solutions. Skills in database design or implementation of user interfaces is a merit. You shall have excellent skills in data handling and master at least one scripting language (e.g. Python, Perl, R). Experience of database handling and Unix system administration is also required. Knowledge in statistics and Machine Learning are strong merits. You will interact with a large variety of researchers with different scientific backgrounds and must therefore have excellent communication skills (both written and oral communication in English). Since knowledge training of researchers is included in the job, pedagogic experience and skills is a merit. Great emphasis is placed on personal qualities, such as being service-minded and having good ability to collaborate with various researchers.
