Summer Internship - Ultrasonic wind sensor
Oslo
Jotron is a leading international corporation in the development, production and sale of communication systems and safety equipment for aviation and maritime applications. The head office of the Jotron Group is in Larvik, Norway, with subsidiaries in Oslo, Lithuania, England, the USA and Singapore. The Group has approx. 400 employees and an annual turnover of NOK 883 million.
Jotron SKIPPERs technical mission is to make sensors to enhance the situation awareness of navigators on Ships. Our sensors will give information about the influences on a vessel to help the navigator, or navigation systems make the correct decisions for fine control of the vessel.
Background
All ships are influenced by wind. In the worst case, the largest ships can come out of control as wind gusts along its length. Wind information is critical to enable safe navigation; however, sensors are exposed and making them robust and reliable in any weather is a challenge. Wind powered ships are providing massive efficiency benefits, but these are totally reliant on correct wind measurements.
The Project
This project takes wind sensors from concept to prototype, looking at housings, technologies, and effective information transfer to the navigator, whether human or machine.
Project will have the following phases
- Concept definition and research
- Study of acoustic methods and configurations
- Definition of sensor housing,
- Expected inputs
- Processing requirements and methods
- Electronic Hardware required
- Display GUI and requirements from standards
- Programming phases
- Testing method and design
- Identification and acquisition of parts for the prototype, Sensors, Transceivers, Processor, Communication
- Prototype design Mechanical – A mechanical housing capable of housing the acoustic sensors will
- Prototype design electronics – using Jotron hardware modules and/or commercial modules a sensor hardware will be made
- Prototype manufacture – Using 3D printers and molding techniques a design will be prototyped, assembled and tested
- Programming of sensors
- Based on Jotron modules the transceiver will be assembled and the filters and processing will be programmed
- Test of the resulting system parts – Test on site and at sea, using existing sensors as a reference
- Programming the User interface. – Follow standards but also look into other ways of showing information about wind to a user.
Who do we need?
We need people with the following skills
- Mechanical design and manufacture in plastics and metal
- Electronic hardware design with skills in tools Altium and/or Cadence with interest in sensors and sensor design
- Software / Embedded programming to work in algorithms and systems
- Web full stack developer to work on presentation and implementation of the display
What support can you expect?
You will be assigned to be a project leader and mentor in your field. They will guide you through the planning and design, and to get the parts required. Ensuring you can progress. Jotron works with the Openbridge (openbridge.no) consortium to provide information in a user intuitive and relevant way, there may be some cooperation with this team
Where possible, you will receive pre‑built modules to accelerate your work, while also contributing to the development of new, project‑specific modules.
Your primary workplace will be at the Jotron SKIPPER facilities in Oslo, with occasional workdays at our Larvik office.
