The Stockholm Environment Institute is a dynamic and expanding workplace that employs around 110 people from 28 different nationalities in an activity-based office in central Stockholm (Garnisonen), and with an additional 200 employees in centres around the world.
The role
We are recruiting for an experienced graphic designer to take our visual communications to the next level. For this part-time role, we are looking for someone who is motivated to build the design capacity and apply their creative talents at one of the world’s leading environmental research institutes. Ideally, you would maintain a voice in and keep up-to-date with the latest developments in design practice and look for opportunities to bring those innovations into SEI. In this role, you will provide strategic advice to make our research more accessible to and engaging for our target audiences and find ways for design and visual communications to uncover new research insights.
You will work in projects and implement and develop SEI's visual communications in close cooperation with our other graphic designer and the corporate communications team. You and your colleague will build capacity together and inspire colleagues across the global communication team.
You will explore possibilities for visual communications, collaborate with colleagues to develop and execute ideas.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Keep visual identity up to date and empower colleagues to implement it with training and guidance
- Be an institute-wide champion for design and visual communications by building capacity and understanding of how visual communication of our research can increase our impact on policy and practice
- Work within visual guidelines and helping to improve and evolve them
- Collaborating with researchers, analysts and communicators to find opportunities for visual storytelling
- Turn multidimensional data into attractive and accessible graphics.
- Clarify and discussing early ideas, possibly with sketches or mockups
- Turn concepts into engaging graphs, infographics, simple animations and more
- Create visual assets and templates for web, social media and print.
Who you are
We are looking for a designer with at least 6–8 years of relevant experience. You enjoy working in a communications team that spans expertise in media relations, digital communications and strategy. You are an excellent collaborator who will work in tandem with a full-time designer to advise and provide services to people who have limited design experience. You have an impressive design portfolio with real-world examples showing work from the concept stage to final visual design.
You ask in-depth questions to understand the context and purpose of your work, both about the data communicated as well as the audience. You enjoy working in an international and diverse environment. You are creative, curious and humble in your approach and patient when working with colleagues who may be unfamiliar working with graphic designers.
Due to the international nature of SEI and our projects, you must be fluent and comfortable working in English. Swedish language skills are a plus, but not a requirement.
Formal qualifications and knowledge
- At least 6–8 years of experience in a graphic design role
- Degree in graphic design / visual communication, or equivalent working experience
- Experience in training and empowering others to implement visual identity and creating graphic assets using templates and other tools
- Experience with software and production tools with ability to expand own' knowledge as new needs arises
- Precise knowledge of craft of graphic design, typography and branding
- Experience with design and production of both printed and digital materials
- Preferable knowledge of animation, video production and relevant software
- Strong coordination and organizational skills
- Ability to be in dialogue with stakeholders not necessarily familiar with design work and always in a constructive manner, helping to build a culture around design.

- Close attention to detail
- Ability to estimate how long tasks take, prioritize and deliver according to schedule
- Comfortable working in English.
Location
You do not need to be a Swedish or EU citizen nor have a work or residence permit in order to apply for a job at SEI HQ. However, you are required to already be residing in Sweden and preferably also Stockholm for this role.
