Are you interested in exploring the European Union and its role in implementing the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals? The International Climate Risk and Adaptation (ICRA) team is searching for an intern to work with SEI colleagues on policy coherence and integration between the Green Deal and other flagship EU policies in the context of geopolitical tensions and increasing securitization of global governance.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to support SEI’s work by examining the current policy landscape and formulating policy priorities for the EU, as well as its relationship with individual member states, to manage the cross-border climate risks to the European economy through international trade channels and critical infrastructure.

What you will do

The intern will be a member of the ICRA team and will participate in weekly team meetings and monthly deep-dives (focused team discussions).

The intern will have the opportunity to get involved in the following tasks:

  • Review key EU policies across multiple sectors, such as climate, energy, cohesion, trade and infrastructure, and undertake an analysis of policy interactions, focusing on synergies and trade-offs, between the core objectives of respective policies as well as between the EU and member state objectives.
  • Review literature on securitization and policy coherence and contribute to developing an analytical framework that integrates these two sets of literature.
  • Undertake stakeholder mapping and support stakeholder engagement and interviews on, among other topics, cross-border climate risks, to gather insights and build an evidence base on the preparedness of policymakers and industry actors.

Who you are

We are looking for someone who is studying political science, economics, international development, or a similar field, with a specialization in the European Union and/or security, peace and conflict.

You are driven by questions related to climate change and sustainable development and are skilled in basic qualitative and quantitative methodologies, with a keen interest in mix-method approaches. Advanced Excel skills and the ability to perform simple statistical analyses are a bonus. You must be willing to work in a collaborative environment and possess a natural ability to coordinate and drive tasks forward. This internship can also be part of your thesis work.

Skills and experience

  • student currently undertaking a bachelor’s or master’s programme in EU studies, environmental science, political science or another relevant discipline
  • fluency in spoken and written English
  • proficiency with Microsoft office
  • excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.

Location

The internship is based at SEI HQ in Stockholm. An in-person internship involving office visits 1-2 times per week is preferred but an online internship may also be acceptable.
