We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.

Your work assignments

Your main project will be the biophysical characterization of human low-voltage-activated calcium channels, CaV3.2 and CaV3.3. The main scientific approach will be the combination of cut-open oocyte Vaseline gap voltage clamp with voltage-clamp fluorometry. As part of your training, you will develop the project, learn, and apply the scientific approaches, and analyze your data. You will communicate your findings in scientific conferences and publications.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in biological sciences or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in cell biology and other related topics. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Fluency in English is mandatory.

Priority will be given to candidates who have a strong background knowledge of voltage-dependent channels and practical experience in the key experimental approaches:

  • Expression of ion channel genes in Xenopus laevis oocytes
  • Voltage-clamp studies using the cut-open oocyte Vaseline gap technique
  • Protein structural dynamics using the voltage-clamp fluorometry approach.

Your workplace

Our international group comprises of one research engineer, one PhD student, two postdoctoral scientists and a PI. Our group is part of the Linköping University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences and the Division of Cell and Neurobiology, which carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within Medical Science. We are also members of the prestigious Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine, which focuses on the interface between science, medicine, and technology.

The employment

In connection with your admission to the doctoral program, your employment as a PhD student is handled. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date will be 1st of September 2024.

The salary of PhD students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
