Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!

The Department of Thematic Studies was the first in Sweden to offer an academic setting for thematically organised, interdisciplinary, socially relevant research. We combine strong research with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and courses, often in collaboration with actors outside the university.

Hereby advertises a position as
Postdoc in Environmental Change with focus on cost effective sensor systems for greenhouse gas measurements
formally based at the Department of Thematic Studies.

Research at the Department of Thematic Studies – Environmental Change covers a spectrum of environmental issues related to nature and society. Our strategic research areas include climate change, biogeochemistry and contaminants, energy and resources, as well as learning and communication. The Division of Environmental Change also conducts research education and teaching in environmental sciences and hosts an undergraduate and a master program, as well as offers individual and teacher training courses in environmental science, thematic science and geography.

The announced position is a part of the research on cost-efficient sensor systems to develop new ways to measure greenhouse gases. The work will in this case be carried out in collaboration with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Linköping University.

The Postdoc project is expected to contribute to the development and testing of energy efficient wireless sensor networks for measurements of primarily carbon dioxide and methane, in various applications. Important tasks include to ensure energy supply and effective data transfer in remote locations with complex terrain and under variable weather conditions.

The work requires responsibility for research, including planning, creative development work and trouble-shooting, field work in remote locations during system tests in Sweden and/or abroad, experiments and sampling for e.g. system calibration, and analyses of samples and data. In addition, an important part is to write and publish scientific papers in collaboration with other researchers, and in different ways contribute successfully to research initiatives, and develop positive, stimulating and creative working conditions.

A minimum level of skills on work with sensors, logger units, and associated data is required.

Beyond this, the evaluation is based on the level of competence regarding the following areas that are meriting (not all areas are required, both broad merited competence in several areas or in-depth competence in one area can be viewed as positive):

  • Electronics, data and network protocols, and integration of microcontrollers, sensor, and logger units with network and cloud-based data transfer solutions.
  • Handling of large amounts of data and databases storing these data.
  • Programming and modeling of relevance given the above requirements.
  • Relevant types of IoT applications
  • Distributed sensor networks in challenging outdoor environments.
  • Visualisation and extraction of information from complex multidimensional data.

Good English skills are required for the position.

As stated in Qualifications below, Postdoctorial Fellowships are mainly intended for persons who have graduated no more than three years before the end of the application period, but in this case work experience in relevant areas can be seen as an advantage and exceptions from this time limit can be made if special reasons exist.

A Postdoc will essentially carry out research. The position may also involve teaching, but during no more than a fifth of work time.

The position requires a doctorate or an equivalent degree from a foreign university. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application.

Appointment time
A Postdoc is appointed until further notice, but for no longer than two years. The appointment can be renewed if there are special reasons.

Starting date
By agreement.
