PhD student in Computer Science, specializing in knowledge graph integration

Linkoping

Reference number IDA-2024-00191

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

Your work assignments

You will conduct scientific research within a project in which we aim to develop approaches to compute queries over heterogeneous federations of knowledge graphs, where multiple dimensions of heterogeneity need to be considered (e.g., different ontologies and different data models). Research work in this project ranges from establishing formal foundations to developing and evaluating efficient query processing techniques; as a basis of the latter, the development of relevant benchmarking methods is another aspect of the project.

Concrete work tasks for you as a PhD student in this project involve the conceptual development, the formal definition, and the implementation of query planning and query execution techniques; the design, the setup, and the execution of experiments to evaluate these techniques; the adoption of developed prototypes to specific application scenarios; as well as the writing of articles about the results of the research.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Computer Science or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Computer Science. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

We expect candidates to have previous experience with a range of knowledge graph technologies (e.g., RDF, SPARQL, OWL, SHACL, RML, Property Graphs) or with techniques employed within database query engines (e.g., query optimization techniques, join algorithms). It is an extra merit if a candidate has done their Master’s thesis on a topic related to the creation or the querying of knowledge graphs or on a topic related to the internals of a database engine.

Furthermore, candidates need to have excellent study results, very good programming skills (ideally in Java), and a high proficiency in oral and written communication in English.

The work of a PhD student is driven by curiosity, passion for innovation and creativity, and ability to work independently.

In your application, please include

  • a cover letter of at most two pages, explaining your motivation and why you fit the advertised position,
  • an academic CV that includes the names and email addresses of 1-2 referees,
  • a transcript of records listing your courses and grades,
  • links to your theses and (if applicable) publications.

Your workplace

The Department of Computer and Information Science was founded in 1983 but its roots go back to the early 1970s. It is one of the largest computer science departments in northern Europe. Our research covers a broad spectrum of fields, from core to applied computer sciences. Its vast scope also benefits our undergraduate and graduate programmes, and we now teach courses in several engineering programmes at bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as the programmes in statistics, cognitive science and innovative programming.
