We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.

Your work assignments

The Ph.D. student will participate in the project, “XX-Health: The molecular origins and health implications of skewed X-inactivation in girls” within the research group of Colm Nestor.

Your duties will consist of conducting research in medical genetics and epigenetics with a focus on research on X-chromosome regulation in humans and its relationship to female health. Specifically, the project will focus on the study of how skewed X inactivation may contribute to T-cell-related disease. You will be part of an active and international research group where you are expected to present your work at both local and international meetings.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Biology /Experimental and Medical bioscience/ Genetics or related fields or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Biology /Experimental and Medical bioscience/ Genetics. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience of isolation of human T-cell populations from blood
  • Extensive experience of in vitro polarization of primary human T-cells
  • Good knowledge of Long noncoding RNAs in the context of X-inactivation
  • Experience of Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in primary human cells
  • Moreover, you have experience in fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) as well as standard molecular biology techniques such as Western Blot, PCR, Elisa, multi-plex PCR and capillary electrophoresis.
  • This project requires extensive knowledge of human X-chromosome biology

  • The position requires very good knowledge of both spoken and written English.
  • Intermediate knowledge of spoken and written Swedish is also meriting.

You have a good communication and collaboration ability that facilitates your work in a research group with different cultural backgrounds.

Your workplace

You will work at the Division of Children's and Women's health (BKH), in Colm Nestor's research group. The Division of Children's and Women's health (BKH) carries out pre-clinical and clinical research, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate education within the field of women’s and children’s health.

The employment

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
