Would you like to tackle an exciting doctoral role in biomedical engineering at one of Sweden’s premier universities?

Your work assignments

The research focus of this position is systems biology within forensic applications. The project involves developing new mechanistic, statistical, and deep learning models to address questions at postmortem forensic investigations. These questions include estimating the time of death and determining the cause of death using large-scale metabolomics data. The project encompasses both fundamental research to create new systems biology models in this field and applied research to demonstrate the utility of these new methods in solving real-world problems within the forensic domain. The doctoral project will be conducted in collaboration with the National Board of Forensic Medicine (Rättsmedicinalverket, RMV).

This position is part of the project “How to Solve Murders with Postmortem Metabolomic Fingerprints and Artificial Intelligence,” funded by the Swedish Research Council. The project involves researchers from various fields, including forensic chemistry, forensic medicine, systems biology, and machine learning. The doctoral position requires interdisciplinary collaboration between the doctoral student and other researchers in the project.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You hold a Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Engineering Biology, or a related field relevant to the project’s research focus. Alternatively, you have completed courses of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level in the aforementioned areas. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

You need to have knowledge of both mathematical models and biological/medical systems. Proficiency in implementing new models and algorithms in a suitable software environment is essential. Additionally, the candidate should have a strong drive to solve real-world problems through fundamental research, collaborative abilities, and effective communication skills. Fluent communication in English (both orally and written) and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and external stakeholders are crucial.

Your enthusiasm for research aligns with ours, and we eagerly anticipate your arrival as a new doctoral candidate!
