Linkoping

Reference number IDA-2024-00151

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are now looking to appoint two postdocs in the field of AI and machine learning with a focus on scientific applications.

Work assignments

The primary focus of the postdoc positions is research in machine learning with applications in science. The aim is to develop novel machine learning and other data driven AI methods for scaling up and improving scientific processes beyond what humans can do, for further developing the underlying scientific understanding, and for facilitating groundbreaking new scientific discoveries. The position will be in close cooperation with researchers from other disciplines, especially material science.

There will be good opportunities to influence the direction of the research. We are always open for suggestions of new important and interesting research directions.

As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.

Qualifications

To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree.  This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.

It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.

We are seeking applicants who have a doctoral degree in machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer science or similar. A successful candidate should have deep and broad knowledge and experience in machine learning and related areas with a proven academic track record. Publications in leading AI/ML conferences such as AAAI, ICML, IJCAI, ICLR, NeurIPS or similar is expected. Knowledge and experience of other scientific fields, especially material science, is a merit. The ideal candidate has already worked on applying AI/ML to other scientific disciplines.

Scientific curiosity and the ability to think independently are essential personal qualities in a candidate. You will be expected to engage with colleagues and cooperate in supporting the activities of the research group. You must also have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Oral and written communication skills in Swedish is a merit.

We are looking for enthusiastic people to join our interdisciplinary research group. You should enjoy working as part of a team and be willing to learn from your co-workers and to share your knowledge and experience with them in return. You will also be encouraged to contribute to the training of junior group members and collaborate with other group members on different projects.

Motivate in your personal letter why you are interested in the position and why you are especially qualified for it.

The workplace

You will be employed at the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDA) at Linköping University. The opening is for two postdoc positions, one based at the the Reasoning and Learning Lab (ReaL), Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems (AIICS), and one at the Division of Statistics and Machine Learning (STIMA).

Linköping University is an AI research excellence center with strong and broad research and education in AI both from a technical and interdisciplinary perspective. Coordinator of one of the four EU-funded networks of AI research excellence centers (TAILOR). Host of the largest basic research program in Sweden Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) as well as the Wallenberg AI and Transformative Technologies Education Development Program (WASP-ED). Host of the National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden (NAISS) including an Nvidia SuperPOD (Berzelius).

The Division of Artificial Intelligence and Integrated Computer Systems is highly regarded internationally for its research in many areas of artificial intelligence with a history dating back to the 70s. The Reasoning and Learning Lab mainly conducts research in the areas of machine learning, machine reasoning and their intersection with applications in, for example, autonomous systems, multi agent systems, and industrial use cases.

The Division of Statistics and Machine Learning is characterized by a modern view of the statistical subject, where probabilistic models are combined with computational algorithms to solve complex and challenging problems, as well as a statistical view of machine learning which clearly integrates the two subject areas within the division. We conduct research of both theoretical, methodological, and applied nature, with application areas including autonomous systems, bioinformatics, social science, climate and weather prediction, and materials science.

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish society and industry.
