The position

You will work in a multi-disciplinary team at the intersection of stress, affective disorders and drug addiction, with focus on animal models of relapse to study the behavioral and neurobiological mechanisms of drug relapse and craving.

As Principal Research Engineer, your tasks will consist of:

  • Surgery for insertion of intravenous catheters in rats and stereotaxic surgery
  • Intravenous self-administration models for opioids
  • Molecular and biochemical techniques and analyses such as PCR, immunohistochemistry, RNAscope
  • Confocal and fluorescence microscopy, microscopic imaging, and signal quantification.
  • Design, acquisition, and analysis of data from anatomical and functional neural circuits mapping experiments for encoding specific behavioral phenotypes in animal models.
  • Training and supervision of students and members in the research group
  • Assist with administrative tasks related to the research group such as orders, inventory of supplies and chemicals, etc

The person we need

We expect you to have a Ph.D. in neuroscience, experimental psychiatry, or a related discipline, a strong track record and research experience in Neuropsychopharmacology and addictive disorders.

Completed Animal Science Course (LiU course 8FO0069 -Laboratory Animal Sciences, 5 credits or equivalent course at another university) is a requirement. The applicant should have experience working with rodent models for affective disorders/addiction. Proficiency in intravenous catheterization surgery is essential. You must also have experience in behavioral neuroscience and stereotaxic surgery in rats, work with virus vectors, as well as other lab techniques such as immunohistochemistry, PCR, RNAscope and confocal microscopy.

The applicant must show great initiative, be organized and have well-developed communication skills. As you will be in an international environment good knowledge in both spoken and written English is a requirement. Furthermore, you are responsible, committed, and able to work independently while you have good interpersonal skills. Emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

The workplace

You will work at the Center for Social and Affective Neuroscience (CSAN) and belong to Ida Fredriksson's research group.

You will work at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences (BKV), which is one of the university's largest departments with operations primarily within the Faculty of Medicine. Our goal is to conduct education and research in medicine and biomedicine, with high international quality. At BKV you will find leading research with both cutting edge and breadth within a large spectrum of modern biomedicine.
