SMHI is looking for a researcher in the field of urban climate to strengthen our research activities with a focus on high-resolution modeling of meteorological processes in cities, especially in connection with heat stress. We offer a stimulating work environment with international collaborations and flexible working methods.

The Research Unit

The Meteorological Research Unit at SMHI conducts research and development in weather forecasting, climate analysis, understanding of atmospheric processes and air quality. We work with observational data, meteorological analysis and model development for regional weather forecasting as well as with remote sensing, climate analysis and air quality from global to urban scales. Today, we are 40 researchers at the Unit, divided into two groups, forecast/observations and climate/environment. Our research activity is largely externally funded and the department attracts research funds at both national and European level.

About the position

The work fits within the scope of a specific research project (Bright, https://www.smhi.se/en/research/research-departments/meteorology/bright-1.181462) and related R&D activities, with the goal of producing heat-related high-resolution data for large cities in Sweden.

The software systems we work with in research and operational activities are mostly developed in Python and Fortran. We work in a Linux environment on both cluster and desktop computers.

The work takes place in close collaboration with other SMHI's experts in urban climate and provides opportunities for specialization and development of own expertise in the field through research, publications and participation in international meetings and conferences.

We think it is important to have a good working environment, with a balance between work and leisure, to contribute to the employees' quality of life. We strive for a workplace that is characterized by diversity and where different strengths and experiences can complement each other.

Your profile

We are looking for you with a university education and a doctorate in engineering, natural science, meteorology/atmospheric physics or another field that SMHI deems equivalent. You also have an interest in programming and modeling complex dynamic processes in the urban atmosphere.

Requirements:

  • Documented experience and competence in modeling meteorological processes in cities on local/micro scale, and/or dynamic downscaling from regional/urban scale to local/micro scale is a requirement.
  • Documented good programming skills.
  • Experience with Linux.
  • Good knowledge of Python.

 Merits:

  • Good practice in documenting and reporting your work (technically and scientifically)
  • Experience from work in international projects and interdisciplinary collaboration

In particular, education/knowledge/experience in the following areas is considered meritorious:

  • Fortran or C/C++.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling
  • Modeling heat in cities
  • Transport/dispersion modeling on urban/local scale
  • Boundary layer meteorology
  • Computer science (e.g., machine learning, neural networks)
  • System development
  • HPC

You are interested in supporting the entire production chain from scientific and technical development to its operational production, and in identifying user needs and opportunities, as well as contributing to project applications.

Since the algorithms and methods you will be developing are to be implemented in SMHI's product range and services, it is important to rely on high standard code, that is tested, easy to maintain and efficient to execute. We therefore assume that you are interested in writing "clean code" and have an interest in constantly further developing your programming skills and working methods.

The work must be carried out and coordinated in teams and therefore you should be able to collaborate with others. You are structured and used to leading, planning, organizing and prioritizing work effectively. You are determined and able to set and fulfil deadlines. Your communication skills are important and you are used to presenting/communicating results in internal and external contexts. You have good knowledge of spoken and written English. If you lack knowledge of Swedish, it is important that you can use Swedish as a working language within two years.

It is an advantage if you already have permission to live and work in Sweden (e.g. EU citizenship).

Employment Type: Permanent, full-time position.

Location:  At SMHIs main office in Norrköping. While most of the work will be conducted at the office, you have the opportunity to work from another location when suitable for the operations.

Application Deadline: 2024-05-31

Welcome with your application!
