At SMHI, technology and physics are closely intertwined in our production chain. We work with advanced technical systems and models that produce data that contribute to a sustainable and safe society in a changing climate.

Rossby Center is SMHI's research and development unit for climate research. We study and inform about the climate system and its underlying processes, as well as climate variability and its future development both globally and regionally. Our main tools are the global and regional climate models that we develop.

The unit consists of competences in research, programming, communication and administration. The work culture is characterized by a high level of education and ambition in terms of the research, and also by a sense of community and cooperation between different projects and competences in the unit and with other functions in the department and the rest of SMHI.

About the position

SMHI is now looking for two skilled programmers with the ability to develop and apply climatological data standards in the context of powerful data systems. The tasks include developing a production chain for climate data, intended for researchers and for existing and new climate services. It involves the development and further development of advanced software, mainly coded in Python, for post-processing and analysis of climate data, as well as the management, quality control, enhancement and processing of large volumes of data in scientific data formats such as NetCDF.

It also includes driving, promoting and technically developing and supporting the use of advanced software. Thereby contributing to raising the level of software development, partly through integration and cooperation with SMHI's other IT activities. The work is done in projects, either within SMHI or with external partners in Sweden and Europe. The work is prioritized in projects or across projects.

In our research activities there are often several solutions to a problem, so you need to be able to think creatively, often in collaboration with others, to find the best solution. As a scientific programmer, you are an important link of several different roles in a production chain, the collaboration in the chain and in projects is crucial for efficient operations. Therefore, it is important that you can collaborate, relate and communicate well and have the ability to understand other people's perspectives on issues.
