The unit for Hydrological Research works in Sweden, Europe and worldwide with developing Water and Climate services based on forecast and scenario tools. We assess and predict variability in water resources, climate change impacts, and water quality in catchments. Our work aims to improve decision-making for water resource management and environmental control, as well as forecasting in early warning services for water-related sectors. We work directly with external users and support SMHI’s operational divisions. The unit is very international with some 40 employees from 15 countries.

We are now looking for highly motivated research colleagues with experience in hydrology, water and climate research, and data processing, to further develop our water and climate services in Sweden and internationally.  As a team member in our production system, you will contribute to our ongoing projects, with diverse collaborations in Sweden, Europe and globally. The work includes programming, scientific analysis and publishing in scientific journals.

The successful colleague will work mainly within the following focus area: 

  • Forecast of water variables: Hydrological forecasting and post-processing at different time horizons, i.e. short to medium, sub-seasonal, seasonal, and decadal. Evaluating different methods, i.e. bias-adjustment, seamless combination, multi-modelling averaging, ensemble sub-selection, and machine learning, for improved hydrological forecasting.

The position is temporary for 2 years, starting from 1st September 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter, with 100% working time and located in Norrköping.

Your profile

We are looking for goal-oriented colleagues, passionate about their work, who are comfortable working both independently and in teams. Very good skills in English in both speech and writing is required. Good skills in Swedish, in both speech and writing, is meritorious with the ambition to learn Swedish within a year.

You have a doctoral degree in hydrology or a closely related field. You have a deep understanding of hydrological processes at catchment scale and landscape level. You need to have good knowledge in programming linked to water and climate research. Proficiency in R and Python is a merit. Additional merits if you have experience with FORTRAN, GIS, the Linux environment and hydrological modeling. You have proven experience in handling/managing and analyses of large data volumes, gridded and otherwise, and in various formats (e.g. netcdf), for research as well as other applications (e.g. forecasts and climate impacts). You have a documented continuous production of scientific papers.

We value skills in giving presentations and lectures, team work, agile approaches and delivery of results in a timely and qualitative manner. A well-developed professional international network is a merit. You have a work permit for Sweden (this is the case for EU citizens).
