We are now looking for you with a great interest in the ocean, research, and leadership. As the group head for research and development in physical oceanography, you will have the opportunity to both conduct research and play a crucial role in advancing the group's scientific work and direction.

The Research and Development department at SMHI

You will become part of an international and innovative research environment in the research front. The R&D department's activities are knowledge-oriented, IT-based, and rely on computational models and high-performance computers as essential infrastructure. The department's units produce process understanding, data, and services in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, and climatology, enabling crucial and well-informed decisions in the sustainability field at local, national, and international levels.

About the Oceanographic Research Unit

The unit is responsible for SMHI's oceanographic research within, and the development of oceanographic models for, operational oceanography, climate, and biogeochemistry in the Arctic, Baltic Sea, Skagerrak, and North Sea, including coastal zone models. It has expert knowledge in a range of areas associated with marine research, such as marine biology, marine observations, numerical modelling, and remote sensing. The unit also participates in SMHI's expert group on sea levels and performs research in Antarctica. The work is largely conducted within externally funded national and international projects, as well as in grant-funded projects, not the least concerning climate change in the oceans.

About the position

In the role of group head, you will have personnel and budget responsibility for approximately 10 employees working primarily in physical oceanography in Gothenburg and Norrköping. The unit includes researchers, postdocs, research leaders, project managers, and a communicator. There is also an ongoing recruitment for SMHI's professor of oceanography.

You create good conditions for employees' development and participation in the activities. You will be proactive in ensuring a high scientific level, together with the employees and through your own research, concerning decision support, research methods and their results, modelling, analyses, data production, and data usage. The group head also participates in the management and development of the Oceanographic unit by being part of its management team.

Your profile

We are looking for someone with a PhD in oceanography or another field that SMHI considers equivalent. You also have good knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language, as well as spoken and written English.

For the role, experience is also required in:

  • analysis and research work in oceanography, as well as expert knowledge relevant to the unit's subject areas
  • working with project applications, project management, and participation in international research networks
  • written and oral scientific publication and communication, as well as presenting knowledge materials and representing a knowledge organization to various recipient groups

Strongly meritorious for the position is experience/knowledge in:

  • physical modelling of the ocean, as well as in the research areas of ocean climate and/or physical oceanography
  • seeking and attracting external funding, especially within the framework of international funding (e.g., EU framework programs, Copernicus) and in collaboration with international consortia
  • personnel management

Merits required for the position are:

  • proficiency in the use and analysis of data from coupled physical-biogeochemical oceanographic models
  • established national and international networks relevant to the position
  • international work experience and leadership of culturally diverse teams, including experience in promoting team-building and individual development
  • management of large projects, preferably in research and within an international context
  • experience in activities involving programming (preferably Python, Fortran, Bash), web development, supercomputers, high-tech infrastructure, and digitized production
  • knowledge of administrative support systems (Agresso, Primula) and advanced skills in Microsoft Office
  • experience in planning and monitoring finances
  • experience in management roles within Swedish administration

To succeed in the role of group head, you thrive on and are motivated by research in general and research leadership in particular. You appreciate interacting with others where your communication skills shine. You have a good understanding of and interest in ensuring that research results can quickly be applied and communicated to, and shaped with, internal and external users. You are highly motivated to contribute to the development of SMHI's oceanographic activities and to keep them relevant in a changing society. To engage your team in this endeavor, you believe, as we do, that it is best achieved by creating good structures for work and through a coaching and trust-based leadership approach.

Form of employment: Permanent, full-time position

Placement: Placement is at SMHI's main office in Norrköping. A majority of your working time is in the office and you have the opportunity to work from home when it suits the work.

Application deadline: 31st of August
