The Department of Meteorology is the leading department in Sweden for research and education in Meteorology and Physical climate science, including Atmospheric physics, Dynamical meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. We study processes ranging from the deep ocean to the mesosphere and use tools including theory, statistics, numerical modeling, and measurements from the ground surface and ships, using balloons, aircrafts, rockets and satellites. The department employs over 25 scientists and about 30 PhD students and is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, that together with five other departments at the university supports and promotes interdisciplinary research in climate and Earth system sciences, and is also a partner in the Swedish e-science Research Centre (SeRC), promoting the use of computational tools for scientific discovery.

Project description
In this project, we have a vision of further developing the Large Eddy Simulation technique for the atmospheric boundary layer for very large problems, such as simulating the full diurnal cycle with both the nighttime and daytime turbulence well resolved. We intend to examine all numerical aspects, and especially the lower boundary condition, with the aim of making the code efficient for exascale computing.

The project, funded by the Swedish e-science Research Centre, is a collaboration between the Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University, the Department of Mechanics at the Royal Technical University, Computational Mathematics at Linköping University and the Rossby Centre at SMHI.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country in Meteorology, Oceanography, Climate Science, Fluid Mechanics, Applied Mathematics or in a related field.

Assessment criteria
The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

The assessment is based on previous research experience. Research on developing and/or applying LES codes on atmospheric problems will be an advantage. Doctoral candidates may apply for the position if they expect to receive the PhD degree before the starting date of the position.

The applicant should have excellent knowledge of both oral and written English.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for two years with possible extension. Start date during winter/spring 2019 as per agreement.
