The Department of Political Science is a dynamic and strong education- and research department at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University. The Department aims to be nationally leading and internationally prominent within its field of research and education. Environmental Politics and International Politics are central research topics at the Department. Environmental Research in the Human Science is cross-faculty research initiative in the academic area of human science.

The Department announces one vacant position as 2 year postdoctoral fellow with an orientation towards Global environmental politics and sustainable development. The postdoctoral position is fully funded for 2 years and placed at the Department of Political Science. A postdoctoral fellowship within the same program is also vacant at the Department of Political Science at Lund University

Project description
The postdocoral position will be part of a 4-year research program Transformative partnerships for sustainable development: Assessing synergies, effectiveness and legitimacy of UN multi-stakeholder across SDGs to achieve the 2030 Agenda, funded by the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (Formas). The program is led by Professor Karin Bäckstrand at the Department of Poltical Science at Stockholm University and the Institute for Future Studies together with researchers at Lund University and Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. The overarching aim of the project is to examine if, how and when multi-stakeholder partnerships can contribute to the implementation of 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To answer these research questions, the project employs a mixed-method design by combining qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze multistakeholder partnerships across the world and related to environmental, social and economic dimensions of UN:s global goals.

Main responsibilities
The main responsibility for the postdoctoral fellow is to conduct research within the research program in collaboration with other projects participants. Research will focus on the effectivness of multi-stakeholder partnerships task will involve data collection, analysis,interviews, field work and dissemination of results through scholarly journals and conferences as well as project coordination. The position involves 20 percent teaching.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
The degree must have been completed at latest before the employment decision is made, but no more than three years before the closing date. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

We seek candidates with a PhD in Political Science or related disciplines with a background in environmental and sustainability politics, international relations, development studies comparative politics and/or policy studies. Experience from previous studies of United Nations and global sustainability governance, the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, private-public partnerships is a merit. We are particularly interested in candidates with qualitative methods background, with an emphasis on qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), although mixed-methods is also a merit. Additional merits include capacity to work in an international cross-disciplinary team of researchers and to communicate research findings to wider audiences beyond academia. The candidate must have excellent skills in academic written English. The postdoc is expected to contribute several workpackages in line with the program’s aim and research questions and research tasks will be conducted in dialogue with the PI and other consortium members.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date earliest November 2022 or as per agreement.
