Postdoctoral Fellow in environmental science

Stockholm

Ref. No. SU FV-1646-24

at the Department of Environmental Science. Closing date: 16 June 2024.

The Department of Environmental Science is one of the biggest departments at the Faculty of Science. The department is divided into four units with more than 170 researchers, teachers, doctoral students and technical/administrative staff from over 30 countries. Research and teaching focuses on chemical contaminants, atmospheric science, biogeochemistry and (eco)toxicology. As an employee at the Department of Environmental Science you will be part of a dynamic environment with research in leading research areas and a strong international profile.

Project description
The postdoc project is part of the Biodiversa+ project DESTRESS (Deciphering temporal trends and safe operating spaces for river biodiversity within the context of multiple stressors), funded by the EU and national funding agencies. The overarching goal of DESTRESS is to provide guidance and actionable knowledge needed to balance freshwater needs between riverine biodiversity and human society. Data analysis tools will be used to investigate links between biodiversity and major stressors such as hydrology and pollution by synthetic chemicals. A co-creation process involving water managers, relevant authorities and other stakeholders will be used to develop a Safe Operating Space to support evidence-based implementation of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

Main responsibilities
The postdoctoral fellow will specifically contribute to two parts of the DESTRESS project. First, the fellow will investigate links between land use (e.g. waste water treatment plants, agriculture, population density etc) and impact on hydrology and level of contamination by synthetic chemicals in European rivers. This task involves handling and alayzing of big data. Second, the postdoctoral fellow will contribute to the development and scientific analysis of a process to ensure and facilitate regulatory and management implementation of the ouctomes of DESTRESS. Throughout the project, the fellow will work closely together with other members of the DESTRESS interdisciplinary research team of ecologists, hydrologists, environmental chemists, environmental scientists and social scientists as well as with various stakeholders. The fellow is expected to contribute to and lead the writing of scientific manuscripts.

Qualification requirements
Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances. Special reasons refer to sick leave, parental leave, elected positions in trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances as well as clinical attachment or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills in environmental science. The successful postdoc candidate is expected to have a PhD in environmental science or equivalent, with documented experience of data analysis tools and community/stakeholder engagement. Experience with science-to-policy processes and knowledge on European legislative frameworks associated to biodiversity and water management, as well as on biodiversity measures and drivers of change is considered an advantage. Experience of work in inter-, and transdsiciplunary research will also be of benefit.

We also wish that you have:
