The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science at the Faculty of Humanities has around 120 employees and a teaching volume that includes around 350 full-year students. Many large national and international research projects are underway here. Our education includes philosophy, logic, linguistics, language technology, theory of science and liberal arts. The department also conducts research training and development work in these areas.

We are now looking for up to 3 annotators for a research project that investigates word meaning negotiation in social media and in spoken interaction. In short, word meaning negotiation involves dialogue participants discussing what a word or phrase means. Your job will be to read short conversation excerpts and identify if they contain word meaning negotiations, as well as the type of negotiation. Your annotation will be used to devise automated methods to identify word meaning negotiations. Based on this, we hope to be able to draw conclusions about how the meanings of words are negotiated in interaction. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council.

Duties

Your job will be to attend a short training course where you will learn how to identify and annotate word meaning negotiations. After that, you will read and annotate on your own and when it suits your schedule, but you will need to complete the annotation within a set amount of time. The annotation will be done through an online platform (LabelStudio) that can be accessed through your personal laptop.

Qualifications

We are looking for people who have a good knowledge of English. In addition, a basic understanding of semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, and/or interaction analysis is a bonus. It is also a bonus to be a student in linguistics, language technology or any language subject.

Employment

Intermittent employment. We offer an hourly wage of 125 SEK per hour, and the opportunity to learn a lot about dialogue analysis. The number of hours you'll end up with can vary but will likely be around 40-80 hours in total. The annotation will take place between June and September 2024.
