The position is located at Campus Steneby, a unique environment for education and research in crafts and design at the University of Gothenburg. In our educations, we strive to develop knowledge of materials and technology as a basis for pushing the boundaries of material-based craftsmanship and design. With a strong focus on artistic exploration and design methods, we provide students with the tools to enable the application of their skills in new contexts in a rapidly changing world.

HDK-Valand is now looking for a substitute lecturer in Wood Oriented Furniture Design who will teach 30% of full-time at the undergraduate level during the autumn semester of 2024. More information about the program can be found here

Wood Oriented Furniture Design

 

Subject area description 

The artistic exploration through form, techniques, methods, and not least in different wood materials is an essential part of the subject and its development. Throughout the exploratory process, it is important to have a palette of different tools to develop furniture and interiors. It is only in the dialogue with the human being that the piece of furniture comes into being, where it acquires different meanings. Research and proven experience are key for the development and understanding of the subject in local and global contexts and through a range of collaborations.

 

Duties 

You will be part of the teaching team that works with Wood Oriented Furniture Design at undergraduate and graduate levels.

The work duties include:

- Teaching at the undergraduate level

- Supervising students in design with a focus on design processes and presentation techniques at the undergraduate level

- Planning the pedagogical structure, evaluation and quality assurance of teaching in the subject, in collaboration with other teachers

- Supervise practical work and simple prototype manufacturing

- Administrative work

The tasks are carried out in close collaboration with the team, who work together to run and develop the education. The team includes a professors, senior lecturers, adjunct and workshop technicians. Instruction is in English.

 

Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. 

To be eligible for appointment as a lecturer, the applicant is required to have demonstrated teaching expertise and to have completed higher education at second-cycle level at least, or have the corresponding competence or some other expertise that is of value in view of the subject area content of the post and the duties it will involve. 

This position requires experience of teaching at university level.

 

Assessment criteria 

Teaching expertise means that the applicant has:

- Documented pedagogical experience at university level.

- Good ability to convey knowledge as well as commitment and interest in the subject-

- Documented experience of administration and/or project management, such as the ability to take responsibility for planning, organizing and developing projects or courses where experience of course development within college/university is a merit.

Artistic expertise means that the applicant has:

- Documented expertise in design

- Documented collaboration in professional contexts
- Documented artistic development work is a merit

- Documented experience of working in wood is a merit

 

Other assessment

- Knowledge of materials and furniture manufacturing is meritorious

- Documented administrative skills and organizational skills

- Documented good collaborative and communication skills

- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

- Your personal approach to the subject of design is also important.

In this recruitment, we will primarily consider who, is judged to have the best conditions to carry out the relevant tasks, in relation to existing skills in the team. Great emphasis will be placed on subject-specific competence, pedagogical skills, and personal suitability.

 

Employment 

  • Fixed-term employment, temporary position LAS § 5.2 The temporary position may be extended.
  • The scope of employment is 30% of full-time
  • The position is located at HDK-Valand, campus Steneby, in Dals-Långed
  • The employment period August 19, 2024 - January 19, 2025, or the date we later agree on.
