Post-doc working with Antarctic mooring data

The Department of Marine Science conducts science, education and innovation related to the sea and its resources. The operation is conducted in Gothenburg, at the research stations Kristineberg Center for Marine Science and Innovation and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, as well as on the research vessel Skagerak. The department has an interdisciplinary width that includes marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, marine conservation and oceanography, and the research area spans geographically from coast to world ocean. Our scientists and students often have prominent roles in international expeditions, from Antarctica, Arctic, and the great world seas, but also work in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analyses methods. The department also has a broad education palette, including a bachelor’s program, three master´s programs and a Ph. D. education in the marine domain. 

 

Project introduction

The ice-covered parts of the oceans have a key function for the climate and future sea levels. Due to technical challenges of collecting data in these remote and inaccessible areas, very little is known about these systems and their future changes. In the present project forcing mechanism for flow of warm salty ocean water towards the ice shelves of Antarctica will be investigated and their role in the general circulation of Antarctic shelf regions will be quantified. Oceanographic data gathered through field work in the region, primarily from moorings placed in the ocean and left to measure continuously through the year, but also ship based field data, remote sensing products and data gathered by ocean robots will be used to understand the driving forces between the circulation of warm ocean currents below the ice shelves.

This position is an opportunity to perform research based on a unique set of time series collected over several years. Depending on the preference and expertise of the right candidate, the position can be focused on time series analyses, on water mass modification and mixing, on larger-scale regional ocean circulation, and/or a modelling focus.

 

Subject area 

Physical oceanography, with focus on polar oceanography.

 

Duties 

The work will consist of conducting research in the broad topic described above. The right candidate will be given opportunity and time to focus on research and support for developing their research career. It will also be possible to co-supervise students in the topic. It is possible to combine the job with work at sea on field expeditions but this is not a requirement. You will work in a small group consisting of researchers at the University of Gothenburg, University of Bergen, and two Ph. D. students working in the project.

 

Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. 

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made. 

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.  

 

Assessment criteria 

We are looking for a person who is interested in pursuing a research career, has a good sense of order, and is used to working both independently and in groups. A good ability to cooperate and a good ability to communicate in writing and orally is important for communicating the scientific results.

It is a requirement that the candidate has completed a Ph. D. in a relevant physical oceanographic field.

It is meriting if the candidate has documented experience of conducting independent research.

 

Employment 

The employment is a fixed-term employment for three years, 100% of full time, placed at the Department of Marine Science in Gothenburg. Starting date is June 1st, 2024.
