The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The School of Public Health and Community Medicine, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts extensive education and research in global public health, general medicine, occupational medicine, environmental medicine, social medicine, medicine use and pharmaceutical policy. We also conduct education and research within nutritional epidemiology, insurance medicine, innovation and utilization, health economics, biostatistics and register epidemiology.

Occupational and Environmental Medicine are investigating health effects caused by exposure to chemical substances, physical and ergonomic factors, hand-arm vibration and stress at work. We investigate and conduct research on patients with diseases and injuries caused by both work and environmental exposure. Physical health risks, mainly vibration injuries, represent a large proportion (about 15-20 %) of the patients referred to the department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Within two ongoing projects (SBUF and AFA) the risk of vibration damage in building carpenters, construction workers, dentists, dental hygienists and dental technicians is investigated. Building carpenters are exposed to high-frequency and impacting tools, construction workers to low-frequency non-impact vibration exposure, and dental workers to high-frequency non-impact vibration exposure. It is of great value to be able to evaluate the risk of vibration damage during high-frequency exposure in comparison to high-frequency exposure with impact. Through design improvements and the manufacture of new non-vibrating tools, there are great opportunities to greatly reduce vibration exposure in working life and its consequences in the form of vibration damage. The project is also of great value for the clinical investigation of individuals with vibration-related problems such as white fingers and distal neuropathy in the hands.

Duties

The tasks of the project are to compare different occupational groups with different types of vibration exposure. Furthermore, clinically useful methods are being developed for diagnostics and follow-up of individuals who have developed a work-related vibration injury, such as screening and medical forms for the diagnosis of vibration injuries, further development of clinical measurement methodology as well as the development of questionnaires and examination methods for monitoring subjects with established vibration injury.

An important objective is to develop, in collaboration with other participants in the research project, an annex to the current vibration ISO-legislation, which assess the vibration exposure up to 1250 Hz and try to find preventive test methods to be able to determine the individual’s sensitivity to vibration exposure before employment.

Another important task is to develop teaching material concerning vibration injuries for medical students at the University of Gothenburg.

Qualifications

Eligible to apply for the position is a licensed physician who is a specialist in occupational and environmental medicine/occupational and environmental medicine with a doctoral degree (PhD) in medicine or occupational and environmental medicine/occupational and environmental medicine.

Solid research experience and documented knowledge in the relevant research area is a requirement.

Experience of medical investigation of individuals with vibration injuries is a merit.

Documented scientific experience in the research area shown by publications in journals with an international reference system will be given great importance.

Scientific experience must be documented through ongoing research grants in national and/or international competition.
