The department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries with about 200 employees. The department comprises the three divisions Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Subject area description 

We are looking for senior lecturers in mathematics or mathematical statistics who can strongly contribute to the department's ambition to conduct both teaching and research at the highest international level.

The new employee is expected to contribute with high quality teaching in undergraduate education and to be involved in the development of the education program.

Job assignments

The job assignments include

  • teaching and development of courses in mathematics or mathematical statistics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level,
  • conducting research,
  • supervising students (at bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level),
  • participating in the department's activities through administrative assignments,
  • applying for external grants.

You should actively seek challenges and new opportunities to develop yourself. Communication and collaboration skills are important as many of your tasks will be performed in collaboration with others. Furthermore, you are expected to collaborate with the surrounding society, for example in collaborative projects and in popular science activities.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. We expect you to have a doctorate degree in mathematics or mathematical statistics, or equivalent scientific competence regarding the subject content of the employment and the tasks included in the employment. You are also expected to have documented pedagogical experience and skills in mathematics or mathematical statistics at university.

The official language at the University of Gothenburg is Swedish and teaching normally takes place in Swedish at the bachelor's level and in English at the higher levels. Good language skills and the ability to teach in English are required. Applicants who do not speak Swedish at the time of employment are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Courses in higher education teaching and learning of at least 15 credits or equivalent competence is necessary for the employment. If this is lacking at the time of employment, the employee is expected to acquire such an education within two years.

Assessment

The applications are mainly assessed based on pedagogical and scientific merits and potential. Special emphasis will be placed on pedagogical merits and potential.

When assessing pedagogical qualifications, special emphasis is placed on the ability to plan and teach courses in the subject area. It is important that you can communicate well orally and in writing, collaborate, inspire, and engage students and that you can take personal responsibility for your work tasks. Documented experience of and interest in the development and use of digital aids in teaching is an advantage.

When assessing scientific competence, special attention is paid to research documented through high-quality publications. Quality is more important than quantity. Successful research after a doctoral degree and international scientific collaboration are meritorious.

After an overall assessment of merits and development potential, we will select the candidate that is judged to have the best qualifications to carry out the tasks included in the employment, collaborate with other staff members, and contribute to a positive development of the department. The weighted assessment also includes how the applicant's qualifications and plans strengthen and complement the department.

In the case of otherwise equivalent qualifications, the ability to teach in Swedish already at the start of the employment and / or experience of teaching courses in financial mathematics or knowledge in this area is an advantage.

In assessing merits and experience, parental leave, sick leave, or other similar circumstances will be considered. The reasons and scope should be stated in connection with the presentation of merits and experiences.
