Data coordinator
The Department of Marine Sciences conducts research, education, and innovation related to the science of the ocean and its resources. Its activities are based in Gothenburg, at two research stations (Kristineberg Center for Marine Research and Innovation, and Tjärnö Marine Laboratory), and on the research vessel Skagerak. The Department has an interdisciplinary scope that encompasses marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology, preservation of marine cultural heritage, and oceanography, working in all marine habitats from shallow bays and coastal seas to the open oceans. Our scientists and students often play leading roles in international collaborative research, including expeditions to Polar regions and the great seas of the world, as well as in our newly built laboratories with advanced equipment and complex analytical techniques. The Department also offers a wide range of undergraduate courses, a Bachelor’s degree, three Master's degrees, and a Ph. D. programme, all within marine sciences.
Duties
We are looking for a highly motivated and curious Data Coordinator to join our team and help facilitate our ocean research through improved data management of our unique observational datasets. In this role, you will work at the intersection of oceanography, data science, and environmental research, helping to transform raw data towards quality controlled and findable datasets that ultimately support scientific research and decision-making.
You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary group of highly supportive scientists and students. Your work will contribute to improving our understanding of ocean dynamics, and the impacts of our ocean on climate variability.
This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about both scientific exploration and advanced analytics, and is eager to work with diverse oceanographic datasets, ranging from in-situ ocean robotics to ship observations.

More specifically, the data scientist within the Polar Gliders research group, will be responsible for the care of all aspects related to data, quality control of data (with input from scientists) and our server management. There may be opportunities to travel (project meetings, cruise planning meetings and workshops) through the diverse ongoing projects, including the ERC projects WHIRLS (www.whirls.eu) and SOFIA, which have partners spanning France, Germany and South Africa.
Tasks/responsibilities
We are looking for a person who will be responsible for data management and data science activities within Polar Gliders (www.polargliders.com), which include but are not limited to:
- Processing of our observational (gliders, USVs, ships, etc) datasets to follow standard practices of metadata and FAIR principles
- Refinement and maintenance of our ERDDAP data server
- Publishing our observational datasets to Zenodo and to ERDDAP for distribution
- Maintaining our operational and piloting webpage —polargliders.com, which includes maintaining reproducible code that processes our raw datasets to science quality figures
- Google drive management of documents that assist our management of observational platforms, sensors and piloting
- Management of our local server
- Depending on the candidates interests and ambitions, they may be trained to remote-pilot gliders/USVs and attend oceanographic research expeditions
Qualifications
A Masters in Ocean Science or equivalent university degree. A good habit of working with people and ability to adjust to a rapidly changing work environment. The candidate must be fluent in working with open-source software systems such as GitHub and Python. The tasks require that you have a good ability to collaborate with different professional categories in an international environment and are proactive at identifying potential problems. The habit of communicating both orally and in writing in English is a requirement. You are welcome to be interested in the technical components of scientific sensor testing and integration. A large emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.
