Reference number PAR 2026/268
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Earth Sciences has about 80 employees. We have Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Earth Sciences and Geography and third-cycle education. Our strongest research areas lie within climatology, ecosystem sciences, petrology/geochemistry and applied geoscience. The department's research strategy emphasizes further development of Earth System Science. For more information about the Department: https://www.gu.se/en/earth-sciences
Assignments
The Regional Climate Group (RCG: http://rcg.gvc.gu.se) is part of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. RCG focuses on climate at regional-to-global scales based on instrumental data, and data from global and Regional Climate Modelling. RCG has a unique profile within the Swedish climate research community and an international reputation in the fields of regional climate analysis and modelling. RCG actively participates in a national strategic research program MERGE (ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system).
- identify and analyze historical climate variability and change with a focus on extreme events that are relevant for migration;
- analyzed household structure and migration patterns using ethnographic and household survey data.
- investigate underlying mechanisms behind formation, maintenance, and change in those climate events that are critical to migration, and
- Assess and quantify the impacts of household structure and climate change on migration, and develop climate migration decision models using statistical methods, numerical simulations, and machine learning to project future changes.
Qualifications
To be successful in this position the applicant will need:
- A PhD degree in meteorology, or what the employer considers a closely related field
- Experienced in climate-migration research, with interdisciplinary collaboration with social scientists, and has published peer-reviewed articles on climate-migration as a primary contributor
- Numerical simulation and modeling skills, preferably with CESM
- Proficient in advanced statistical analysis of observational and climate model data, with extensive experience in machine learning, as well as in processing and analyzing ethnographic and migration survey data
- Documented expertise in detection and attribution of extreme events; and strong knowledge of climate dynamics and regional processes, including interactions between large-scale atmospheric circulation and local phenomena
- Proficient in programming and data visualization (Python, NCL, Fortran, and MATLAB)
- Written and oral communication skills, including publishing research results, writing reports, and making scientific presentations
