The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Department of Medicine, Department of Community Medicine and Public Health, conducts extensive teaching and research in global public health sciences, general medicine, occupational medicine, environmental medicine, social medicine, drug use and drug policy. We also conduct teaching and research in nutritional epidemiology, insurance medicine, innovation and utilization, health economics, biostatistics and registry epidemiology.
Neurological, psychiatric and cardiovascular diseases are a major contributor to global ill health and premature death. Many of these diseases are preventable and their risk factors accumulate throughout life. As this disease panorama becomes numerically dominant later in life, most studies on risk factors have been conducted in older populations where potentially important influencing factors from a young age often cannot be captured. We have several ongoing studies of Swedish men and women linked to several nationwide registries including health profiles later in life. We investigate the importance of early risk factors for various chronic diseases. Risk factors we study are, for example, occupation, work environment, physical fitness, BMI and mental illness. We are also conducting a large study in primary care within VGR, called Moving On, for patients with anxiety.
