Postdoctor in Rheumatology
Reference number PAR 2024/896
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Rheumatology and Inflammation Research, at the Institute of Medicine, the main research areas are inflammation and inflammatory diseases irrespective of whether they are caused by allergies, infections or are autoimmune diseases. The aim is to investigate the underpinning mechanisms behind the inflammation. Several of our researchers also work as senior consultants at the clinics at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, which is a great advantage especially for translational research.
Professor/Chief Physician in rheumatology Inger Gjertsson, and Professor Lill Mårtensson-Bopp, expert in B cell immunology, have a long-standing collaboration where they study the significance of different B-cell populations in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Together, they have 3 PhD students, 2 postdocs, a research engineer and a bioinformatician. Lab meetings are held regularly and the department of rheumatology and inflammation research holds regular seminars. Infrastructure for clinical research, single-cell RNA sequencing, flow cytometry, and advanced microscopy is established.
Subject area
Rheumatology
Subject area description
RA is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting 0.5-1% of the populationdisability and reduced life expectancy. Our project investigates the role of memory B cells (MBCs) in RA pathogenesis. Recent findings highlight an unusual MBC subset (CD21- Tbet+) that correlates with disease severity. Additionally, we identified 10 other MBC subsets, most of whose functions remain unexplored. This study aims to define these subsets using flow cytometry and/or other relevant methods, in collaboration with a bioinformatician, to define their gene expression profiles, antibody repertoires, and clinical relevance. The goal is to advance therapeutic precision in RA treatment.
Duties
Job assignments include handling of human tissues and blood, flow cytometry, confocal and light microscopy, cell culture, analyses using molecular biological and immunological methods. Management and analysis of clinical data, compiling data for publication as well as applying for research funding are also included. In addition to this the assignment includes presenting results at seminars and conferences, writing manuscripts and supervision of students.
Eligibility
To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree in a relevant subject, or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Assessment criteria
To be a successful candidate you are required to have a PhD in biology, molecular biology, medicine or a closely related field, good knowledge in immunology and very good knowledge of flow cytometry. You shall have the ability to perform common routine analyses in an immunological laboratory, proven experience in handling human blood and tissue samples, ability to work independently and have good interpersonal skills. You shall also have excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written. It is meritorious if you have experience in handling and analysing clinical data, good knowledge of rheumatology and previous experience in scientific publishing.
Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability and personal characteristics such as a structured approach, teamwork skills and good sense of initiative.
