Job assignments

The Department of Earth Sciences is now looking for a visiting lecturer to support teaching in hydrology and hydrogeology courses during the fall of 2024. The successful candidate will teach in the courses “Applied hydrogeology” (GVG460) at Master's level and “Hydrology and Hydrogeology” (GV2002) at Bachelor’s level. The courses are taught full-time (40 hours per week) and consist of lectures, computer exercises, laboratory tests, excursions and a field course. The guest teacher will be mainly responsible for teaching theory and will also, together with the course coordinator plan, prepare and supervise all other parts of the course, including examination.

Courses are taught in English, which is standard at the Master’s level. The course at the bachelor’s level is open to international students and therefore offered in English.

The courses are taught from September 2 to November 4. Both courses require intensive preparation. After termination of the second course, the visiting lecturer will grade exams, reports and help with the evaluation of data obtained from field experiments needed for future courses. It is therefore required that the employment is spread over a period preceding and following the course period, e.g. from August 01 to November 30 and that the work is carried out parttime. Continuous presence in Gothenburg is not required throughout the entire period of employment, and working hours can be arranged according to the schedule and availability of other teachers.

Qualifications

The general qualifications for academic positions are stated in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg as well as the University’s own employment procedure where the eligibility requirements for visiting lecturers are expressed.

The employment requires either a comprehensive knowledge in hydrology with focus on groundwater and an education in geoscience or civil engineering focusing on water resources. Experience in teaching within the above-mentioned subjects at Bachelors and Master’s level is a requirement.

The courses include interactive and online elements and make use of various techniques for self-studies. Experiences in online-teaching and supervision, the use of interactive teaching tools and self-study materials (e.g. Jupyter notebooks) is therefore meritorious.

Excellent communication skills in English are a requirement.

A PhD in a relevant subject area is regarded as meritorious.

The application must include a brief description of courses the applicant has been involved in as a teacher, the applicant’s role in the respective courses, approximate number of teaching hours per course (lectures, seminars, exercises, excursions) and the number of times/years the applicant was involved in the course.
