About the department
At the Department of Applied Information Technology, critical and interdisciplinary research is conducted in an international environment of the highest quality with great relevance to the surrounding society. Our researchers are in the midst of the debate to help explain and problematize IT- and society-related challenges linked to the digitalization of society.
We develop the individual's knowledge and ability to analyze, understand and handle various aspects of IT as well as the interaction between human and technology in areas such as human-computer interaction, Artificial Intelligence, blockchain, digital innovation, e-Health, mobile communication, robots, social media and IT in schools and teaching.
We provide education at Bachelor's and Master's level anchored in research and the development of society.
The department is located at the knowledge-intensive Lindholmen, and has a well-developed collaboration with both business and public sector as well as the civil society.
About the division of informatics
The Division of Informatics consists of approximately thirty researchers who work specifically on issues related to digital innovation, open innovation, digital platforms and digitalization of the public sector. The researchers are regularly published in international top journals.
All teaching at the division's program, Master in Digital Leadership and the Bachelor's programme Information Systems reflect the strong research environment.
In both research and education, the division has a long tradition of working closely with industry and the public sector. The division hosts the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation, SCDI, and also offers contract teaching.

Subject area description
The postdoctoral researchers will be part of a new initiative (www.uttc.se) funded by, among others, Vinnova, aimed at broadening the adoption of net-zero solutions through twin transition. The goal is to reduce city emissions by 20% over the course of the project. Given the focus on the twin transition, the subject matter will be information systems with a connection to green transformation.
The job assignments include research in the form of data collection, analysis, publication, and utilization. The project is looking for two different types of postdoctoral researchers.
Postdoc type 1
To take on the project assignments, the postdoctoral researcher will join a research group on Organizational Dynamics at SCDI. This group stands at the intersection of organizational studies, digital innovation, and computational methods, delving into the deep and transformative shifts organizations experience in response to evolving digital technologies.
The postdoc will play an important role in our exploration and understanding of the "Twin Transition" concept. By applying advanced computational methods, their work will be central to deciphering the relationship between green and digital transformations. By investigating how digital technology can support sustainability goals, the researcher will help exploring how digital and green approaches can lead to enhanced efficiency, productivity, and broad societal benefits.
The postdoc’s tasks will be multifaceted. They will utilize computational techniques such as social network analysis, sentiment analysis, time-series analysis, etc., to extract meaningful patterns from data. A large part of this analysis will involve unstructured text data. Through the power of Natural Language Processing (NLP), and by leveraging machine learning and AI techniques like embeddings, they will extract and interpret patterns from vast data streams. A notable part of their assignment will involve delving into public sources, such as earnings conference call transcripts. This will enable them to map both the current landscape and historical trends concerning the overlap of digital and sustainability discourses. Further, the researcher will engage in predictive analytics, aiming to anticipate the future trajectory of these intertwined discourses and the potential intersections that may arise.
The postdoc will also be tasked with identifying potential synergies between digitalization and sustainability in the context of “smart cities”. This represents a unique opportunity to dive into the nexus of urban digital infrastructure and sustainability goals. The researcher will have the chance to tap into real-time data streams from smart city initiatives, covering areas like urban transportation, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. Such data, combined with insights from existing digital platforms and technologies within urban environments, can provide a holistic picture of how cities are evolving in the digital age. In that sense, the postdoc's exploration in this area could shape the future strategies and directions for integrating digital and green initiatives in the development of smart cities.
Postdoc type 2
The project will scientifically validate the implementation of net-zero solutions and investigate the necessary prerequisites, both technically and organizationally, for national scaling.The postdoctoral researcher will primarily work on qualitative data collection and analysis related to known use cases of net-zero solutions in (mostly) Swedish municipalities.
To be eligible for employment under this agreement, a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required.
This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision.
To be eligible for employment under this agreement, candidates should primarily have obtained a doctoral degree not more than three years previously. For the purpose of calculating the three-year framework period, the starting point is the deadline for applications.
If there are special reasons, such a doctoral degree may have been received earlier than as referred to in the second paragraph. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, trade union duties, military service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignments relevant to the subject area.
For postdoc type 1: Experience in computational methods (e.g., natural language processing, large language models, social network analysis).
For postdoc type 2: Experience in qualitative methods (e.g., interviews, qualitative data analysis).
For both postdoctoral types: We are seeking individuals who are committed to the underlying goals and have a good understanding of digital transformation and sustainability, demonstrating evidence of excellent scientific skills and experience in collaboration with the surrounding society. Particularly meriting is the demonstration of experience in method pluralism and scientific publishing at the highest level (e.g., AIS Basket of Eleven, ABS, FT50), both in terms of published articles and articles close to publication. The postdoctoral researcher needs to be proficient in English and preferably Swedish at a high level.
The university will through this recruitment make a holistic assessment of aptitude and skills and select the applicant which is deemed to have the best pre-requisites to conduct and develop current tasks of the position, interact and collaborate with other staff, as well as contributing to a positive development of the Division and Department.
The position is a fixed-term employment of 100 % of fulltime for two years - in accordance to the collective agreement Agreement on fixed-term postdoc employment - , with placement at The Department of Applied Information Technology, The Division of Informatics.
The start date is 2024-01-01, or as soon as possible thereafter.
