The Department of Historical Studies is a part of the Faculty of Humanities. At the department, research and teaching are conducted in the three subjects of history, archaeology, and ancient history. Work at the department is performed in collaborations between the three subjects. The project Humanitarian Great Power? The Local Reception of Refugees in Sweden, 1700-1730 is funded by the Swedish Research Council (no. 2021-01520) for the years 2023–2025. For more information on the project, see: As postdoc, you will work closely with the project leader but also conduct your own independent studies.

As postdoc, you are responsible for an independent study of the reception of refugees in three Swedish cities (Uppsala, Härnösand, and Linköping) during the Great Northern War (1700–1721), with a special focus on refugee agency. The source material consists mainly of petitions and sources from public administration (such as the cities’ magistrates, commissionary sources, church archives, etc.). You will also study the reception in a fourth city (Stockholm), together with the project leader.

You are required to publish your results in at least three articles, in internationally leading outlets. You will participate in the organization of a workshop in connection to the research theme. You are expected to present your results at conferences and seminars and participate actively in the academic discussion at the department and within the research field.



To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. To be eligible for this particular position, you must have a doctoral degree in preferably history or related discipline. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist, such as parental leave, sick leave, or military duty.

Applicants must have excellent written and oral proficiency in Swedish and English.

Assessment criteria

The following merits will be considered in the assessment:

  • Experience of scientific publishing in English.
  • Experience of working within one or several of the research fields of early modern migration history, forced migration, the history of petitions, and/or early modern city administration.
  • Experience of working with one or several of the early modern source materials used in the project (petitions, church archives, sources emanating from public administration).
  • Since part of the source material may be in German, good understanding of this language is meritorious.

The applicant will be selected who, after an overall assessment of skill and development potential, is judged to have the best qualifications for the research task at hand. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. The recruiting group may use interviews via video link.
