The Department of Conservation, which belongs to the Faculty of Science, provides professional preparatory education and research specializing in cultural heritage matters, landscapes and cultural environments, buildings, gardens, historical cultural objects and interiors. In Gothenburg we offer degree programs in art conservation and historic preservation. In Mariestad we offer programs in building construction, garden, and landscaping crafts. Research in conservation is multidisciplinary and multifaceted, with research groups focusing on conservation of cultural property, built environments and crafts. Conservation enhances knowledge, skills and approaches to the cleaning, mending, repairing, maintenance, renovation, transformation, restoration, reuse, adaptation and reconstruction of existing tangible and intangible resources, some of which are defined as cultural heritage. Conservation also investigates the use of cultural heritage and existing resources, where the subject area develops critical perspectives and participatory approaches.
The employment is in Gothenburg, but some courses can be in Mariestad.
The duties of an associate senior lecturer are split between research, teaching and collaboration with the wider society.
Teaching assignments includes planning, development and implementation of education on first and second cycle level with a specific focus on the bachelor and master programs in Conservation of Cultural Heritage Objects. These programs includes both theoretical knowledge and practical training. Teaching includes various courses and supervision of thesiswork in conservation. Teaching can also include the doctoral level, laboratory responsibilities, contract education and other programs and courses at the department. Teaching is done both in Swedish and English.
You are expected to actively participate in research, research groups and departmental seminars and to initiate and implement research projects both independently and in collaboration with others.
The position also involves administrative duties and eventually undertake leadership assignments.
The general qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointments Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg. The applicant should have a PhD in Conservation or equivalent subject with relevance for the subject area and job assignments of the position and must also have demonstrated teaching skills.
In this position experience of practical conservation work is also required.
Courses in higher education teaching and learning of at least 15 credits or equivalent competence are necessary for employment. If this is lacking at the time of employment, the employee is expected to acquire such education within two years.
The official language at the University of Gothenburg is Swedish, and teaching usually takes place in Swedish at the bachelor's level and in English at the higher levels. Good language skills and the ability to teach in English are required. Applicants who do not speak Swedish at the time of employment are expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.
The applications are assessed based on pedagogical and scientific merits and potential. Emphasis will also be placed on merits from professional conservation practice, at heritage institutions or in private practice, experience in collaboration between the university and the wider society in Sweden and internationally.
When assessing scientific competence, special attention is paid to research documented through high-quality publications. A documented ability to initiate, plan and implement research after the doctoral degree, international scientific collaboration and ability to obtain research funding in competition will also be meritorious.
Pedagogical qualifications shall be well documented; both extent and quality must be possible to assess. Particular emphasis is placed on the ability to plan and teach courses in the subject area. Supervision on all levels is meritorious.
Professional conservation practice, conservation skills and experience in collaboration shall be well documented.
After a weight assessment of merits and development potential in all areas, we will select the candidate that is judged to have the best qualifications to carry out the tasks included in the employment, collaborate with other staff members, and contribute to a positive development of the department.
