The Department of Political Science has an open climate that encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalisation, environmental politics, and European studies. The Department hosts research programmes such as the QoG Institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Centre for Collective Action Research, (CeCAR), Governance and Local Development (GLD) and the Swedish National Election Studies Programme. We offer several degree programmes at undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral level, as well as freestanding courses. Education is provided in both Swedish and English. We have a total of 1 400 students and a staff of about 160. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

Demscore (acronym for research infrastructure for Democracy, Environment, Migration, Social policy, Conflict, and Representation) is building an advanced and innovative e-infrastructure providing users with free access to harmonized and quality-controlled data from several of the world’s most prominent social science research institutes. The University of Gothenburg leads the Demscore consortium that also includes Stockholm-, Uppsala-, and Umeå universities. The data is provided by Demscore's partnering research institutes:

The national research infrastructure Demscore, hosted by the Department of Political Science, is now looking to hire a Research Assistant.

Job assignments 

The successful candidate will mainly be working with Demscore’s data scientist and Demscore’s program coordinator. The main task is to provide assistance to them in developing the national e-infrastructure Demscore.

This can include:

  • Performing tasks related to social science data and country units.
  • Investigating merge suggestions and identifying merge conflicts between datasets.
  • Creating structured texts using LaTex, transforming other text formats to LaTex.
  • Adding data to Demscore’s joint database.
  • SQL querying.
  • Writing scripts in R related to data processing and data visualization.
  • Working with geospatial data.
  • Assisting with work related to the website and outreach.
  • Assisting with other administrative tasks when needed.


University degree in social sciences (political sciences or related), computer science, or a related field is required. A graduate degree in one of the listed or related fields is meritorious.

Very good communication skills in both spoken and written English are required.

Previous experience of working in large-scale research projects with large data collection processes is highly meritorious, particularly with quantitative focus.

Experience of working with data provided by Demscore’s partnering modules, research and methodology is highly meritorious.

Proficiency with LaTex and SQL, as well as with data processing using R, and/or another statistical language is a merit. The ability to learn how to use new programs quickly is important.

Excellent writing and communication skills, as well as planning and organizational skills are needed for the position as well as being an experienced problem solver. Personal qualities such as social- and collaborative skills are of great importance.
