The Department of Political Science has an open climate that encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalisation, environmental politics, and European studies. The Department hosts research programmes such as the QoG Institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Centre for Collective Action Research, (CeCAR), Governance and Local Development (GLD) and the Swedish National Election Studies Programme. We offer several degree programmes at undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral level, as well as freestanding courses. Education is provided in both Swedish and English. We have a total of 1 400 students and a staff of about 160. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), headquartered at the V-Dem Institute, is a large-scale research and data collection program offering a new approach to conceptualize and measure democracy. V-Dem collects data on some 450 indicators and supplies over 50 indices related to five main types of democracy from 1789-today. The data is collected through an annual data collection cycle, and by the assistance of more than 3,700 Country Experts, the resulting database is the largest of its kind with some 30 million observations. V-Dem is now looking for a Program Manager for Projects, Data Collection Support and, Policy Work

The successful candidate takes on the role as Program Manager for projects, data collection support and, policy work, which is one of the core functions at the V-Dem Institute. All V-Dem staff are able to attend trainings relevant to their position. The position may include job-related travels.  

Job Assignments

The Program Manager is involved in most parts of the V-Dem Institute’s activities. This includes coordinating and working with the annual data collection cycle, which is a key element of the job assignment. In addition, the Program Manager also works with other research and policy analysis tasks and projects at the Institute.

The job assignments can be divided into three main areas:

Data Collection Support: support the coordination and execution of V-Dem’s annual data collection cycle with an emphasis on work with V-Dem’s Country Expert data collection. This includes Country Expert recruitment, communication, and support to Country Experts during the coding period, work with V-Dem surveys, as well as coordination of development projects associated with the data collection cycle and support with administration of Country Expert honorariums.

Project Management & Policy Analysis: be responsible for the Oversight Board Project and coordinate the project in all stages, including recruitment of experts, drafting and proofreading of the case reports, desk research, case reporting, etc. The Manager will also be involved with the Case for Democracy Project, the Democracy Report, the V-Dem Working Paper series and other activities that fall in the same area, providing research support, policy analysis, and administrative tasks as needed.

Internship: as part of the responsibilities, the Manager will be the direct supervisor of the interns at the Institute. The Manager will be in charge of recruitment, supervision, and coordination of the interns’ tasks on a regular basis.


We are looking for a candidate with an advanced degree in Social Sciences, Economics, Business Administration, Accounting, or similar. Previous experience of working with coordination and management in a complex environment including prioritization of tasks with competing deadlines, is needed. Previous experience of working with research and policy-related projects is required. Experience of budget work and financial administration is advantageous. Skills in using Office software packages, especially Excel is required. Previous work experience with FileMakerPro as well as experience of working in a research project with large scale data collection processes is required.  

To be successful in this position, you need to possess very strong planning and organizational skills. You need to be able to analyze how details affect the whole and use your problem-solving skills to implement necessary measures. Being involved in this large-scale project also requires being timely and responsive to huge number of emails on daily basis. 

You also need to have exceptional communication skills in both spoken and written English, as this is the working language at the V-Dem Institute. Knowledge of Swedish, as well as of other languages, is an advantage. Personal qualities such as social and collaborative skills are of great importance since the team members' work is closely interlinked. As part of the team, you should be ready to jump in and take responsibilities beyond.
