The Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science is part of the Faculty of Humanities and employs more than one hundred members of staff. The department hosts several large national and international research projects. Subject area description

Logic is an interdisciplinary subject that uses mathematical methods for applications in philosophy, mathematics, computer science and linguistics. At the University of Gothenburg, logic has been a subject in its own right since 1991, and now covers research in mathematical, philosophical and computational logic. Teaching assignments are mainly in the international Master's (120 credits) programme in logic, but also in other subjects and programmes, mainly theoretical philosophy, philosophy teacher training, and the Bachelor’s Liberal Arts programme. Job assignments

Duties include research, teaching and administration.

If employed in the position, you will be expected to conduct and publish logic research in your areas of expertise, on a high international level. You are expected to actively seek external research funding, preferably in collaboration with other researchers from the department, or from other higher education institutions or subjects. You are also expected to actively contribute to the research environment of the subject, for example by participating in the subject's research seminar.

As a senior lecturer in logic, you will also be expected to teach, primarily in second-cycle logic courses within the Master's (120 credits) logic programme, as well as in third-cycle courses and study programmes, including supervision of doctoral students. Teaching logic and other subjects in first-cycle courses and study programmes may also be included. The teaching languages are English and Swedish. At the Faculty of Humanities, qualification required for appointment as a docent is normally required for second-cycle examination. You will also be expected to contribute to the development of new courses and study programmes.

You are also expected to actively participate in the department's development and work environment efforts, such as workplace meetings and other internal meetings and conferences. The position may also include administrative and managerial duties.

Most of the work will be carried out on site at the University of Gothenburg.



The eligibility criteria for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and in the University of Gothenburg's appointment procedure (see here). Those eligible for appointment as senior lecturer are those who have demonstrated teaching expertise, and who have graduated with a Degree of Doctor in a subject relevant to the position.

According to the University of Gothenburg's appointment procedure, teaching staff who do not have a higher education teaching qualification of at least 15 credits, and who are not deemed to have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way, must undergo such training during their first year of employment.

You must be able to teach in English at the start of your employment. Within five years of starting the job, you will also be expected to be able to teach in Swedish.

In assessing applicants, equal importance will be given to scientific skill and teaching expertise. Administrative experience is also a useful qualification. Assessment criteria for employment as a teacher are specified in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and in the University of Gothenburg's appointment procedure.

In the assessment of scientific qualifications, the applicant's ability to produce and publish research of high international quality, as well as their ability to attract external project funding, are particularly valued. The application must describe the applicant's own research, including how it fits with, and can contribute to or complement, the research conducted at the department.

Both quality and quantity are taken into account when educational qualifications are assessed. Broad experience in teaching logic in various contexts and at several educational levels, as well as experience of supervision, including supervision in third-cycle studies, provide useful qualifications. The same applies to experience in educational administration, including experience in course, programme, and training development.

As a senior lecturer in logic, you are expected to contribute both scientifically and educationally to the research and education environment of the subject. You are expected to have good collaboration skills, both internally and externally, including development of the department´s activities as a whole.
