The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a researcher position at the Department of Physiology.

Researcher in physiology with a special focus on the development of insulin resistance and diabetes during pregnancy.

Obesity in pregnant women is increasing in all western countries. In Sweden, 43% of pregnant women are currently reported to be overweight or obese and the incidence has increased sharply over the last decade. These women are at increased risk of developing gestational diabetes (GDM). Women with GDM have an increased risk of pregnancy and childbirth complications as well as a significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) after giving birth (30% develop T2D within 5 years of pregnancy). The position aims to follow these women in clinical trials to phenotypically characterize and find biomarkers for the risk of developing GDM during pregnancy as well as T2D postpartum.

Job assignments

The assignments include studies of women during and after pregnancy, including determination of insulin sensitivity, hormonal status and body composition with the aim of identifying individuals of highest risk for the development of GDM and T2D postpartum. The work includes methods such as oral glucose tolerance testing, body composition measurements with air plethysmography, cycle tests for maximum oxygen uptake, use of continuous glucose meters, and biomarker analyses. Studies of the importance of neuropeptides for weight development during and after pregnancy are also included in the research. Independent writing of scientific articles and research grant applications is an important part of the position. Teaching and supervision of students at undergraduate and advanced level is included in the position. This includes teaching exercise physiology, course leadership for an elective course on GDM, and supervision of degree projects in the medical program. Planning and management of research projects, as well as collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry are further included.
