The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

  • The Department of Infectious Diseases
  • The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
  • The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
  • The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets.

Position within the research group led by Professor Joakim Larsson, Department of Infectious Diseases, Institute for Biomedicine, Sahlgrenska academy at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (  The focus of the research group is on antibiotic resistance, particularly the role of the external environment. The group consists of 1 professor, 2 associate professors, 6 postdoctoral fellows/researcher and students doing their exam work. Larsson also leads the Centre of Antibiotic Resistance Research at University of Gothenburg (CARe; with more than 100 active researchers. The group has extensive collaboration with other universities, nationally and internationally. The research is interdisciplinary and has significant funding through e.g. the Swedish Research Councils VR and Formas.

Job assignments

The researcher is expected to primarily conduct bioinformatic analyses with the intent to identify previously unknown antibiotic resistance genes, and through taxonomic and context analyses assess the risks these genes pose to human health. The fellow is expected to author/co-author scientific papers and present research at international conferences. The application should be prepared to travel and visit collaborators, primarily within Europe.


PhD in a relevant subject (bioinformatics or nearby discipline). Previous research on antibiotic resistance is required, with particular weight given to experience from environmental dimensions of antibiotic resistance. It is also strongly meriting if the applicant has experience from sequence-based bacterial taxonomic classification, relevant bioinformatics method development and postdoctoral experience. Excellent skills in relevant programming languages are also needed, The applicant should also have excellent communicative skills particularly regarding scientific communication in English, both written and oral, a high degree of independence, a developed way of critical thinking, an ability to work successfully in a group as well as high-quality scientific production in relation to the date of PhD defence.


The employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
