The Department of Psychology has around 160 employees, and conducts extensive research and education in interaction with society. The research conducted has been rated as excellent by international reviewers, and the number of students applying for programs and elective courses is very high. The Department of Psychology is recruiting one, possibly several, associate lecturers in psychology with a focus on neuropsychology
Duties and responsibilities
Duties will include teaching, research and interaction with society. Part allocated for research is 50% of the position. The subject area is neuropsychology, with specific scientific focus on basic research in neuropsychology and associated areas such as cognitive neuroscience. Duties therefore include actively conducting research within this area. As externally funded research is an important prerequisite for the department as well as for individual teachers' research, actively participating in the department's efforts to find external funding is required. Moreover collaborating with colleagues in order to develop the area of neuropsychology within the department is also required.
The work also includes teaching and supervision in neuropsychology in free-standing courses, both first- and second cycle and in the psychology programme, as well as, where appropriate, in the context of commissioned courses. Actively contributing to educational change and development is also part of the teaching assignment. Teaching in other areas of psychology may be included, as well as course coordination and development. Teaching in English may be required.
The position includes professional development and administration in accordance with the current working time agreement and local guidelines.
The percentage of research and teaching is regulated individually based on local employment policy. Duties and responsibilities also include active participation in the further development of the department. Administrative and managerial tasks might also be included.
Eligibility for this position are stipulated in Chapter 4, section 12 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in University of Gothenburg appointments procedure. A person who has completed a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence is eligible for employment as an assistant lecturer. Applicants who do not master the Swedish language are expected to acquire language skills sufficient for carrying out the basic duties within two years. Candidates who have completed their PhD or equivalent scientific degree within five years from deadline for this appointment will be prioritized for this position.
The purpose of the position of assistant lecturer is that the holder should be given the opportunity to develop her/his scientific and pedagogical skills, (i.e. it is a merit-based post and not intended for those who already have a permanent post in the university world).

Applicants will be selected after an overall assessment of merits and potential to carry out and develop the duties and responsibilities described above. In the assessment, scientific merit will be given first priority and teaching merit second.
In the assessment of scientific merit, particular emphasis will be given to research in neuropsychology and related areas such as cognitive neuroscience and biological psychology.
A broad expertise, encompassing several of the subfields of neuropsychology, experience of basic neuropsychological research, theoretical contribution to the area of neuropsychology and skills in neuropsychological method are particularly desirable. Publication in international journals are an important documentation and assessment basis for these skills and experience. Other evidence may include the development of methodologies and other research tools that are openly available. Having received and currently hold external funding is also an advantage.
Experience and skill in academic teaching and supervision should be well documented and verified. Demonstrated ability to teach in English, writing of teaching materials of high quality and documented development of courses or training modules are desirable, as well as experience of course coordination.
Furthermore, consideration will also be given to level of administrative skills especially the ability to create attractive research environments, documented for example through project leaderships, collaborations and by having organized research activities.
Good ability to communicate clearly, structured and pedagogical manner, spoken as well as written, are required. In addition, personal qualities such as accuracy and flexibility, and proven ability to take responsibility as well as to cooperate with others will also be taken into account.
The selection process may include interviews, sample lectures and reference checks. In interviews, the applicants will be given the opportunity to describe and develop their own approach to teaching and research in the field of neuropsychology, as well as their future role at the department. These factors will also be included as a basis for the assessment when appropriate.
Other assessment criteria for employment as a teacher are set out in the Faculty Board of Social Sciences' application of the Employment Regulations for the Employment of Teachers at the University of Gothenburg.
An associate lecturer shall after completing four years of employment, upon application, be promoted to a permanent position as university lecturer in neuropsychology if the candidates merits and qualifications are judged eligible in an assessment according to the assessment criteria for employment as university lecturer that apply at the faculty of Social science at University of Gothenburg.
Completed courses in pedagogical training for higher education at University of Gothenburg, 15 credits (course HPE101, HPE 102 and HPE 103) or equivalent are also required for promotion. For the current position, documented personal progression and development in educational science are required as well as documented development in the area of teaching in neuropsychology at the department.
Scientific competence required for promotion to the position of university lecturer should in particular be shown in research that have reached a scientific level required for associate professor status, as well as continuously publishing research findings in international peer reviewed journals. Contribution to the development of the research environment within the area of neuropsychology at the department in collaboration with colleagues should be shown and documented and active participation in the search for external funding must also be demonstrated.
Applications for promotion must be submitted no later than six months before the end of the fixed-term appointment as assistant lecturer and must follow the Faculty of Social Sciences' template.
The position is a fixed-term contract for four years, and involves 100% service. Starting date by agreement.
