Theory of Science
Subject area description
Teaching and research within the subject area theory of science, focus in particular on the social, political, historical and cultural aspects of science, drawing on theories and methods from science and technology studies (STS) within a broadly post-Kuhnian approach. Central questions concern what is meant by concepts such as scientific knowledge and what significance expertise, standards and different practices have for knowledge production and research at the intersection of society, individuals and institutions; who does research into what and why; how scientific communities are organised and how scientific controversies are generated; and classical epistemological questions around for example objectivity, rationality, realism and relativism.
Our teaching includes undergraduate (first- and second-cycle) courses, as well as external contributions to teaching within other programmes and for other faculties. In relation to external teaching contributions, the candidate must be able to support students who may not be familiar with debates about the epistemology and questions of the social aspects of science and research.
Duties will include teaching in Master in evidence-basing: practice, theory, context (60/120 HEC), in Theoretical and historical perspectives on science, 7.5 HEC, Masters program for communication officers in the public sector (60/120 HEC), in courses within the teacher education programmes for pre-school, primary and secondary school regarding how scientific working methods and approaches are used in the school system. In all of these programmes teaching is in Swedish. Teaching within first and second cycle courses in Theory of Science may also be included in the duties.
The assignments within the teacher education programmes and the Masters programme for communication officers in the public sector are performed in cooperation with other departments.
The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Candidates must have completed their doctoral degree and have pedagogical experiences and skills.
Teaching and research skills will be equally weighted in the assessment of candidates suitability. Administrative experience is considered an advantage. Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the appointments procedure of the University of Gothenburg.
For a position as teacher the applicant should be chosen whom, -after an overall assessment of skills and development potential, is judged most suitable to carry out the tasks involved in the position-. Proven ability in planning, performing, evaluating and developing, both independently and in cooperation with others, relevant teaching, including supervision is an advantage, as is documented ability to develop and deploy innovative teaching methods.
A good publication track record, credentials in the form of successful research grant applications, and a documented ability to engage in public outreach activities will be considered an advantage when assessing candidates’ scientific skills. We are looking for a candidate who can contribute to our subject area both academically and pedagogically, and who has the personal qualities required to collaborate both with a small team and more widely within the university in order to support the development of the department.
