Subject area

Theory of Science

Subject area description

Teaching and research within the subject area theory of science, focus in particular on the social, political, historical and cultural aspects of science, drawing on theories and methods from science and technology studies (STS) within a broadly post-Kuhnian approach. Central questions concern what is meant by concepts such as scientific knowledge and what significance expertise, standards and different practices have for knowledge production and research at the intersection of society, individuals and institutions; who does research into what and why; how scientific communities are organised and how scientific controversies are generated; and classical epistemological questions around for example objectivity, rationality, realism and relativism.

Our teaching includes undergraduate (first- and second-cycle) courses, as well as external contributions to teaching within other programmes and for other faculties. In relation to external teaching contributions, the candidate must be able to support students who may not be familiar with debates about the epistemology and questions of the social aspects of science and research.

Job assignments

Duties will include teaching in Master in evidence-basing: practice, theory, context (60/120 HEC), in Theoretical and historical perspectives on science, 7.5 HEC, Masters program for communication officers in the public sector (60/120 HEC), in courses within the teacher education programmes for pre-school, primary and secondary school regarding how scientific working methods and approaches are used in the school system.
