This position is located within the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology (CMB; at the Faculty of Science. CMB conducts research and education of the highest quality in three main fields: biomolecular sciences, environmental sciences, and fundamental chemical sciences. Research in the department is strongly focused on basic science and covers a wide scientific spectrum, from the atomic and molecular levels to cells and entire organisms. Many of the phenomena studied illustrate the chemical and biological interplay between molecules in our natural environment, as well as in living systems. The department is comprised of around 40 academic staff members and 90 postgraduate/PhD students. CMB is responsible for the undergraduate programs in Molecular Biology, Genomics and Systems Biology, Chemistry, and Organic and Medicinal chemistry, as well as the bachelor program in Pharmacy.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the long-term strengthening of the existing activities within Medicinal Chemistry at the department in close interaction with the Division of Organic and Medicinal Chemistry ( The groups working in medicinal chemistry at the University of Gothenburg are conducting very successful international research on the synthesis and characterisation of compounds with potential biological activity. These groups are co-localised with research groups in organic chemistry, with prime access to state-of-the-art equipment in modern laboratories. The position as Associate Professor will include both research and education in medicinal chemistry.

In the present announcement, we are searching for candidates with expertise and outstanding scientific credentials in medicinal chemistry. The position will be provided with a support package including funding for PhD students and consumables.

The University of Gothenburg is mobilising in the area of life sciences; specifically, a new building for research and education is planned to be completed by the year 2023. This building, which will bring together several departments of the Faculty of Science, will be located in direct proximity to the medical faculty, Sahlgrenska Academy, and Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Also nearby will be the Sahlgrenska Core facilities, which house important infrastructure platforms, as well as the Swedish NMR Centre, which is equipped with 900, 800, and several 600 MHz instruments. In addition to benefitting from these planned improvements, researchers at the University will enjoy the benefit of our existing extensive collaborations with AstraZeneca R&D in Mölndal.

Like most Scandinavian countries, Sweden provides a high quality of life with generous vacation leave and national health care. We offer 480 days of parental leave, free to be taken by the mother and/or the father anytime until the child is 12 years old. Families in Sweden are guaranteed day care within 4 months of registering, and education is free. The university is located within Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city, with an outstanding public transportation system and lively international culture.

Subject area

Medicinal chemistry/chemical biology

Subject area description

The research programme within the framework of the announced position should be complementary to and strengthen the existing activities in the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology. Thus, research activities within medicinal chemistry should have a clear experimental focus on the synthesis of bioactive compounds.

Job assignments

The job assignment includes developing a strong research programme, as well as establishing and leading an independent research group within medicinal chemistry or chemical biology in which the synthesis of bioactive compounds should constitute a significant part. To establish your group, you are expected to actively apply for research funding from national and international research funding organisations.

The job assignment also includes planning and performing teaching within medicinal chemistry in postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate programmes. This teaching will include lectures, exercises, experiments and examinations in several courses, as well as the supervision of doctoral and undergraduate students. Teaching in organic chemistry may constitute part of the faculty member’s duties.

Management assignments and administrative duties both within and outside the department (including in the Pharmacy and Prescriptionist programmes) may also form part of the faculty member’s responsibilities. Collaboration with the surrounding community and outreach will also be part of the job assignment.

A PhD degree or equivalent foreign degree in a subject area relevant to the position is required. Ability to teach in Swedish or English is also a requirement.

Equal weight will be given in the assessment to scientific and pedagogical expertise.

When assessing research expertise, emphasis will be placed on research expertise in experimental medicinal chemistry or chemical biology, of which the synthesis of bioactive compounds should constitute a significant part. Emphasis will be placed on the ability to renew the research area. The assessment will be based on publications in leading international journals; quality and impact will be given more weight than total production. Documented success in obtaining external funding from national and international funding agencies is meritorious. The assessment will also take into account how the applicant plans to collaborate with research groups within and outside the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology.

When assessing teaching expertise, emphasis will be placed on well-documented pedagogical experience, as well as the ability to supervise students and plan, perform and lead teaching. Emphasis will also be placed on the candidate’s capacity for pedagogical innovation and effective development of teaching at graduate and undergraduate levels.

Documented administrative merit, leadership – including the ability to lead and develop personnel – as well as the ability to interact and collaborate with the surrounding community are also meritorious.
