The Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts research in several different areas, such as endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, respiratory medicine and allergology, and clinical nutrition focusing on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with health care at both the Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital.

The research group, which is part of the research collaboration network “Centre for Bone and Arthritis Research” and localized at the “Krefting Research Centre” at the Institute of Medicine, focuses on studying the impact of sex hormones on immunological mechanisms involved in inflammatory diseases and inflammation-induced osteoporosis. The different projects in the group range from basic research (in vitro and in vivo), to clinical studies in collaboration with specialist physicians at the Sahlgrenska University hospital. The research is supported by grants from ALF, the Swedish Research Council and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

Job assignments

The researcher will work with identification of biomarkers and mechanisms for development of osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by the use of prospectively collected clinical data from early untreated RA patients who are included in a randomized clinical treatment trial. The work comprises flowcytometric analyses of immune cells from blood, interpretation and compilation of skeleton x-ray data, as well as work with cell cultures and investigations of other biomarkers of inflammation, immune regulation and bone turn-over in plasma. The work also entails advanced biostatistical analyses, writing of scientific applications and publications, and assistance in supervision of students.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a PhD in a relevant research field and strong scientific productivity. Priority will be given to applicants with experience of rheumatology and osteoporosis research, as well as experimental work with immune cells and cell cultures Previous experience of data analyses and compilation of data (including biostatistical analyses) from clinical trials is a requirement. Experience of working with flowcytometric analyses is a merit. Ability of the applicant to independently plan, organize and structure the work is a requirement. Significant is also the ability to collaborate and the ability to work independently, as well as knowledge and accuracy in data management, data analysis and successful own writing of scientific publications. Fluency in oral and written scientific English is a requirement. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
