The Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg, now seeks to appoint a world class researcher, outstanding teacher and committed colleague to the August Röhss Professorship in Political Science. The ideal candidate will be a scholar of international distinction with an excellent record of research in one or several of the subfields of political science. The candidate will also have a commitment to and enthusiasm for teaching and student advising, institution building, and engagement with policymakers, practitioners and the public.

The new holder of the August Röhss chaired professorship will work in an environment that is already engaged in internationally prominent research in comparative politics, political behaviour, international relations and political theory. The Department is host to research programmes such as the QoG Institute, Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), the Centre for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), Governance and Local Development (GLD) and the Swedish National Election Studies programme (SNES). We offer education at all levels: first, second and third cycle as well as freestanding courses. The languages of instruction are Swedish and English. In total, we have around 1400 students in political science. The Department of Political Science has around 140 employees. We are located in central Gothenburg.

Political Science is the study of politics. Within this academic discipline, we teach and study power, democracy, institutions and political ideas – at the local, national and international levels.

Job assignments

The chaired professorship involves research, research leadership, teaching political science, and administrative leadership tasks. 50 per cent of this full-time position is reserved for research. With external grants, an additional 30 per cent research is possible


The qualifications for positions as professor are provided in Chapter 4, Section 3 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and in the University of Gothenburg’s own Appointments Procedure (Dnr V 2018/161).


The holder of the professorship is to demonstrate all of the following five sets of qualifications:

  1. Ability to conduct world class research in political science
    The evaluation will be based on the quality of each applicant’s publication record, with particular attention to publications in the last ten years. Excellent publications in well respected, international peer-review journals and by reputable academic presses are of particular importance. The quality and impact of the publications are more important than the total number of publications.
  2. Ability to lead, inspire and develop the Department’s research
    The evaluation will primarily be based on each applicant’s record of building successful research environments and spurring research beyond the applicant’s own publications. The ability to lead research projects, to organise local and international research collaborations, and to obtain research grants in competition will also be assessed.
  3. Ability to lead, inspire and develop the Department’s teaching and learning activities towards an even higher international standard
    The evaluation will be based on each applicant’s teaching record at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with special emphasis on the PhD level, and record of developing new courses, curriculum and pedagogical tools.
  4. Ability to take on administrative leadership responsibilities for matters of common departmental interest, together with the Department leadership and administration
    The evaluation will based on the applicant’s record of e.g. operational, daily departmental work such as serving as a Head/Deputy Head/Assistant Head of Department or Director of Studies and/or other qualified administrative roles as well as academic peer review record.
  5. Ability to contribute constructively to collaborations with the general public and engage in public debate on politics at the local, national and/or international levels
    The evaluation will be based on the applicant’s record of e.g. communicating research findings to the public; holding posts or advisory roles for government agencies, organisations and/or the business community; publishing popular science works; participating in media debates; and/or giving lectures/seminars outside the higher education sector.

Each applicant’s record in terms of all five sets of qualifications will be evaluated. In ranking qualified applicants, the sets of qualifications are weighted in numerical order, with the first set of qualifications given most weight and the fifth least weight. Particular weight will be given to the quality of the applicant’s research publications, and, in the second instance, the applicant’s ability to build and lead research environments.

The official language of the University of Gothenburg is Swedish, which means that the holder of the chaired professorship must be able to speak and write Swedish in administrative contexts within two years of being appointed to the position.

We teach in both English and Swedish, so the holder of the professorship is expected to have excellent knowledge of English. Since most of our teaching is in Swedish, the professor is expected to begin teaching in Swedish within three years of starting the position. The University of Gothenburg offers courses in Swedish.

The candidate whose overall qualifications are best suited for performing the duties of the professorship in a collegial and constructive manner will be selected.


The position is a permanent position, fulltime 100 % at the Department of Political Science, Gothenburg University.

Appointment procedure

The documents submitted in the application will be evaluated by three external reviewers solely for this recruitment process. The application must clearly show how the applicant’s record and qualifications meet the evaluation criteria listed above.

The external reviewers will rank the candidates. According to the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 3, equal care is to be given to the evaluation of teaching expertise as to the evaluation of research expertise (even though the research record is then given most weight in the overall evaluation, as described above).
