The Department of Political Science has an open climate which encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalization, environmental politics as well as European studies. The department hosts research programs such as the Quality of Government Institute (QoG), Center for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem), Governance and local development (GLD) and The Swedish Election Studies Program. The department offers education on all levels; undergraduate, graduate and doctoral, carried out in both English and Swedish. We have a total of 1,300 students enrolled in our courses, and 140 people are employed at the Department. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.
The Quality of Government (QoG) Institute at the Department of Political Science, University of Gothenburg was founded in 2004 by professors Sören Holmberg and Bo Rothstein. The institute conducts research on how trustworthy, reliable, impartial, uncorrupted and competent government institutions can be obtained and sustained. The Institute currently engages about 25 researchers and doctoral students.
The QoG Institute hosts some of the most used databases in Political Science. The datasets draw on a number of freely available cross-sectional data sources, including aggregated individual-level data with global coverage spanning. One aim of the QoG Institute is to make cross-national and regional comparative data on QoG and its correlates publicly available.
The Department of Political Science and the QoG-institute are now looking for an additional team member during two years to the QoG data team who will work with collecting and merging country comparative data.
We offer an opportunity to be part of an international vibrant research community and to be involved in many different research projects. You will be part of a creative and self-managing team and engage with different researchers by providing and receiving insights in QoG-related research.
As database manager you will, together with your colleague, be responsible for continuous system and data-flow development, managing of complex data-structures using both Stata and R. The main tasks include monitor, collect and analyze new data from research organizations, academic journals, and reports. Conduct quantitative data analysis utilizing statistical tools. Assisting senior researchers with quantitative data analysis and answering data related questions. Create tables, graphs and other visualizations to complement presentations and published material. Finally, create and maintain project-specific web pages, publications, and data visualization tools.
To be successful in this position you need to have a passion for learning new tools and finding new solutions for an always-evolving code and for communicating knowledge based on our databases to different audiences. The management of the QoG databases requires a system perspective where the data manager is able to see an overall picture while performing smaller tasks. We expect you to have excellent collaboration and communication skills, verbal and written. Fluency in English is required since it is the working language of the QoG data team.
