The Department of Economics belongs to the School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg and has around 100 employees from several countries. The teaching within the department is economics and statistics and the department has around 800 students registered at courses and programs. The research conducted at the department is within a broad range of areas, including labor, health, applied micro, environmental, development, behavioral, and financial economics. Job assignments
The appointment is to serve as a research assistant to Professor Randi Hjalmarsson, and to support her research agenda on biases in police decisions, workers with criminal records in Sweden, and the impact of prison and prison healthcare on post-release outcomes. This research is supported by the European Research Council.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals considering obtaining a PhD in economics to gain data skills and an overview of the research process from idea conception to data collection and cleaning to analysis and write-up.
Specific work tasks will include:
- Researching institutional details of the criminal justice system and labor market in both Sweden and other countries.
- Searching for data and online data sources.
- Cleaning and managing data sets.
- Basic analyses of data.
- Conducting literature searches and writing reviews.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a master's level education (or be studying towards one) in an area of relevance for the position, such as data science, economics, or statistics etc.
The ideal RA candidate will be fluent in English given the in-depth research needs into US/UK policing institutions, while fluency in Swedish is also a benefit (given the diversity of the research agenda). Experience working with data and knowledge of Stata are especially meritorious given the expected priority tasks of the research assistant. Other statistical languages such as R or python, previous experience as a research assistant, demonstrated excellent in quantitative and data-oriented courses, and a genuine interest in the criminal justice system or related issues will also particularly valued.
Employment
The positions are fixed term employments for 11 months with up to 50% of a full-time position. The earliest starting date is 2024-08-01, but can be adjusted per agreement.
The position is located at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg. The applicant must be able to work on-site at least part of the time.
