The department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology is one of the largest departments of mathematical sciences in the Nordic countries with about 200 employees. The department comprises the three divisions Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Subject area description 

We are looking for a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics who can take a leading role in the department's work on collaboration and convincingly contribute to the department's ambition to teach at the highest international level.

The new member of staff will be expected to lead and develop the department's activities in collaboration with schools, the public and society in general, and to contribute with high quality teaching in undergraduate education.

 

Job assignments

The tasks include  

  • management of the institution's collaborative activities
  • teaching mathematics or mathematical statistics at undergraduate level
  • supervising students at bachelor and master level
  • participating in the activities of the Department through administrative tasks
  • contribute to all the activities of the department including research and administrative tasks

You should actively seek challenges and new opportunities to develop your work. There will be room for professional development and own research in the position in accordance with the current working time agreement. Communication and collaboration skills are essential as many of your tasks will be carried out in collaboration with others.

 

Eligibility 

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. We expect you to have a doctoral degree in mathematics or mathematical statistics, or equivalent scientific competence taking into account the subject matter of the position and the tasks involved. You are also expected to have documented teaching experience and skills in mathematics or mathematical statistics at university or college level. 

The official language at the University of Gothenburg is Swedish and teaching is normally in Swedish at the bachelor level and in English at the higher levels. Good oral and written language skills in Swedish and English are required.

A higher education teaching qualification of at least 15 credits or equivalent competence is necessary for the position. Assessment criteria 

Applications will be assessed primarily on the basis of pedagogical merits and potential, experience of working with collaboration and leadership skills.

When assessing collaborative merits and leadership, special attention is paid to communication skills, the ability to establish long-term relationships, to be outgoing, creative and skilled at networking. You will have the ability to inspire and guide team members and a strategic vision to further develop collaborative activities. Proven experience and a genuine interest in collaboration is an asset.

In the assessment of pedagogical merits, particular emphasis is placed on the ability to plan and teach courses in the subject area. It is important that you are able to communicate well in speech and writing, collaborate, inspire and engage students, and that you can take responsibility for your own work tasks. Documented experience of and interest in teaching in teacher education is an advantage.

In assessing scientific qualifications, attention will be paid to research documented through publications. Post-doctoral research and international scientific cooperation will be noted.

For teaching positions, the applicant who, after an overall assessment of skills and development potential, is judged to have the best conditions to carry out the tasks included in the employment, collaborate with other staff and contribute to the positive development of the organization. The overall assessment also includes how the applicant's qualifications and plans strengthen and complement the organization.

In assessing merits and experience, parental leave, sick leave, or other similar circumstances will be considered. The reasons and scope should be stated in connection with the presentation of merits and experiences.
